How can you integrate active learning into your leadership style as an educator?

Understanding context is vital for any inventory taking. How one approaches leadership is always dependent on the where/who/when you are leading. Active learning requires buy-in, and if your voice does not resonate, the simple choice can often be choosing another’s voice. Improvement is vital for evolution, but understanding whether or not a leader has the capability (regardless of ability) to lead is vital for success, regardless of situation.

Assessing your current leadership style is a prerequisite to new adoptions related to changing your current leadership. This will enable you to use different tools that will help you to adapt to new situations ,would start inspiring others and aligning your practices with the guiding principles ( vision, mission and goals).

Active learning is one of the most important ingredient to be successful. And more so, when you yourself are an educator because your role is to transfer the same skill of active learning to the pupil! :) Two very simple ways to integrate it into the leadership style are: 1. Reading regularly; and I do it a lot. If we can make reading a regular part of our work, the benefits are HUGE! 2. Meeting Individuals from varied fields. It can be as simple as meeting people in your organisation handling different areas of work and learning about their work and challenges.

Before integrating active learning into your leadership style, you need to assess several key factors. Personal learning style: Reflect on your own preferred learning style. Do you learn best through hands-on experiences, visual aids, or other methods? Organizational culture: Assess the current organizational culture and its receptiveness to active learning approaches. Team dynamics: Evaluate the dynamics of your team members. Are they comfortable with active learning techniques, or do they prefer more traditional, passive methods? Available resources: Consider the resources available to support active learning, such as physical spaces, technology tools.

Encourage Collaboration: Foster a collaborative environment where students can learn from each other through discussions, group projects, and peer teaching. Provide Hands-On Experiences: Incorporate practical, hands-on activities into your teaching methods. This could include simulations, experiments, case studies, or real-world projects.

Pulling from the L-EAF approach to education evolution towards student-centric learning environments, I would recommend that leaders form cross functional collaborative teams and create small Micro Delivery Cycles of 1-2 weeks in duration and the run through the repeated cycle of. Planning Refinement Collaborative working Risk management Demonstration Reflection for process improvements Use these cycle to practice identifying the tactical steps, that can be completed in a few days, that are aligned with strategic goals that are sized to complete in a Macro Delivery Cycle (approx. 6-12 weeks) and deliver them. Finally, make the work flow process, explicit agreements about the work and the work visible.

I made two teams A and B, while discussing the Difference between 'Physical and Chemical change'. Each team received 1 point on every correct answer. After that, I switch the team members and ask them to repeat what the opponent team had to say on the Scientific term. This not only made the opposing team attentive but also respected the team as they got insights from them. This interaction helped.

Specific active learning opportunities include Socratic seminars, philosophical chairs, inquiry-based learning such as a mystery box investigation, peer led discussions, interactive notebooks, and reciprocal teaching opportunities.

Due to my leadership style, which emphasizes inspiring, motivating, and empowering team members while also adapting to their diverse needs and capabilities, I provide my students with control over their learning. I consistently organize my students into groups of two to three and engage them in active learning activities that align with your goals and objectives, as well as my students' needs and preferences: Case Studies and Simulations, Problem-Solving and Inquiry-Based Tasks, Peer Feedback and Coaching, Games and Quizzes, Problem-Solving and Inquiry-Based Tasks, Peer Feedback and Coaching, Games and Quizzes, and Projects and Presentations.

Discussion around a growth mindset is critical, but even more important is to recognize your own mistakes as an opportunity to improve. Try praising a student for asking a question that uncovered your error. Your students will respect your reflective practice, and their fears of making a mistake during the learning process will eventually abate. Here is an example scenario: "Ximena, Thank you so much for asking that question, I'm excited to learn from this failure in communication. It appears I either forgot to explain some important details of this activity or I miscommunicated altogether. Let's look at this again and learn from my mistake."

1. Demonstrate Commitment: By actively engaging in learning and showing a willingness to grow, you demonstrate to colleagues that learning is a lifelong process. Your commitment can inspire others to adopt a similar attitude towards learning. 2. Set Expectations:Your behavior sets a standard for others. If you are curious, ask questions, and seek out new knowledge and skills, you implicitly convey that these behaviors are valued and expected in your learning community. 3. Build Trust: When you model vulnerability in learning—acknowledging what you don't know and making efforts to learn—you build trust. This openness encourages others to also take risks and engage in the learning process without fear of judgment.

Guide students each day to do all they can on assignments. Reach out for the best performance from them. Students need to have a purpose on doing an assignment instead of doing for a credit. We need to reinforce learning.

As an educator and a leader at that, allowing your students and teachers to make and learn from their mistakes without having to fear for punishment, for me, creates a supportive environment. Although we aim for progress and not for perfection, having that room for improvement assisted with clear procedures and expectations will allow people to work on their own and might give their best at that.

Utilize various feedback mechanisms like student surveys, peer observations, and self-assessments to gauge effectiveness. Knowing that you have accomplished a goal is as important as creating the goal. Our actions need to show consistency in the outcomes of our work to really feel we are accomplishing what it is we desire to do.

At the core of a leader there must be a desire for continual self improvement. This may be enacted through a reflective practitioner philosophy (Donald Schon). Reflect before, during and after the action, event, decision, or conversation. A reflective practitioner is an organic dynamic learner leader!

It is all about the students and their learning, and not at all about convenience, busyness, or status of the professional individual. Active learning is necessary, and like with any leadership style, flexibility is a must. What works one day is not going to necessarily work another day or in another situation. Avoid complacency and status quo and always aim to do what is best for the kids…they deserve it!

Consider fostering a culture of experimentation and innovation. Encourage students to explore unconventional ideas and approaches, fostering creativity and resilience. Embrace failure as a stepping stone to learning, promoting a growth mindset. Incorporate technology to enhance active learning experiences, leveraging tools for collaboration and problem-solving. The first step in integrating active learning into your leadership style is adopting a learner-centered philosophy. This approach emphasizes the importance of recognizing and catering to the individual needs, interests, and developmental stages of young learners. As a leader, I personally model this philosophy by actively seeking out and incorporating feedback from children and colleagues into my teaching strategies and decision-making processes. I personally feel that a culture of curiosity and open-mindedness should not only be accepted but celebrated.

Asking great questions that support problem-solving and design thinking is integral. Teams, and students, are more willing to participate if ideas are openly shared and discussed safely. It is important leaders learn just as much from their team as their team does from them.
