How can you innovate to create a more secure and resilient IT infrastructure?

Few things I've found which is more important are - Step1. Assess the current systems of your company Step 2. Modernize outdated systems Step 3. Invest in robust cybersecurity strategies Step 4. Training a Resilient Workforce to Secure Critical Infrastructure Step 5. Lessons from past crises should lead to innovative, adaptable solutions to future disruptions.

In my opinion, senior management should be first educated in following simple precautions such as changing passwords periodically, not leaving office computers unattended but opened and not delegating approvals online.

Resilience stands for the design that enables quick recovery. If the infrastructure is resilient there are chances that at some point the attackers will give up. Today monitoring the health and response times of each part of an application is a key aspect of system resilience.

In this age of Remote work and Hybrid work, security becomes even more important aspect and also hard to generalise. Let's start with the basic first, "Employee Device Security". It would be great to build a diagnostic tool to be run in the system which the employee is going to work or connect to the virtual system to asses its security standards. Failing which organisation can provide them with a device (assuming organisation already has not). This is important because even if organisation has provided with machine there is no guarantee employee is only going to use it. So the diagnostics is a good idea

Consider the following:- 1. Conduct penetration testing and security assessments to identify vulnerabilities. Continuously update and patch systems based on findings. 2. Assess the security of cloud services, and ensure data encryption and access controls. Implement a cloud security strategy and educate staff on best practices. 3. Divide the network into isolated segments with different security levels. 4. Encrypt sensitive data at rest and in transit. 5. Use Hardware Security Modules to safeguard cryptographic keys and protect sensitive data. 6. Regularly back up critical data and systems. Also, test and update disaster recovery plans to ensure business continuity. 7. Ensure regular audits and update compliance measures.

These are all sound technical solutions. However, there are opportunities unaddressed here for education and awareness among the users of the IT systems to further reduce risk. For example, understanding the personas and use cases for employees and clients to interact with the IT should lead to development of custom training curricula to raise awareness about potential threats and risks to the underlying technical infrastructure. I would also add that what companies care about most is protecting the data that resides on the infrastructure, so I would consider focusing on data protection in the training depending on the audience.

Best practices are in constant change, as are technology and threats. Yet, it is important to keep pace, also starting with basics, including backups and monitoring. Different servers for several non-productive and semi-productive environments, different time-lapse backups and logs are basics which need investment together with multi-factor authentication and firewalls. For major security, encrypting may even imply Blockchain (DLT), which, through block-hashing, also leads to more confidence with unchanging data. Yet, architecture highly depends on objectives and capabilities. Necessary is constant review and self-responsibility which goes beyond IT up to users themselves.

I would prefer having private clouds. In government, we keep our data on the State Data Centre and Cloud Server interacts with all applications in a secure way. Data privacy and data security concerns are much minimized with large institutions building their own Private Clouds

One must be mindful, however, of where servers reside and how those servers are protected. Cloud is a fantastic resource, but ultimately relies on physical infrastructure. Understanding the geography and physical protection of that infrastructure is an important consideration.

In my opinion, cloud has provided the best innovative technology in the business world. It's IT infrastructure blends in the effective techiques of providing a back-up, heightened security, accessibilty and a vast data storage all in one. By utlizing the cloud technology, one finds a dramatic improvement in efficiency and hence in performance.

A culture of innovation remembers the value of trying things out in order to evolve. However, this has to inlude collaboration, self- and shared responsibility, so that all parts of the organisation view themselves as a team in which everyone is part of the solution.

One thing I have found helpful is to consider your IT infrastructure to be a complex and adaptive system. This implies the ecosystem in which the IT infrastructure resides is evolutionary in nature. To be stagnant is to be at risk. To anticipate evolution, and proactively respond to it, is to be secure.

Customer and organisational needs are in constant change, as are the market and environment itself. Hence, there is no perfect and final solution; only a best fit for the moment, which has to adapt continuously. Regulation changes, threats alter, and trends and direction also. Infrastructure cannot stay idle, nor logs, reports and metrics. Reviewing critically is important, for agile improvement to add new value and maintain security and business continuity.

In any business enterprise, including IT strategy, humility is key to success. Humility opens up the possibility for learning. And of course, we should only learn from credible sources. Experimentation is a part of learning, but I would recommend setting up firewalled or sandbox environments in which it is fine and expected to fail with no consequences to real world business operations.

The competition may be doing something well, and it is relevant to understand what, and it may also be if value to communicate openly to reduce systemic risks. Also, not all skills and expertise are in-house. Consultants may bring fresh ideas, and providers may bring focus and training. Periodic expert advice is important, coming from outside business as usual, with further insight.
