I think the biggest mistake someone can make is focussing too much on the end goal, as opposed to the process, which essentially is the part that develops the skills and allows you to learn from mistakes (sometimes in a lower stakes environment). I’m a big advocate of former NFL coach Bill Walsh’s philosophy of allowing the ‘score to take care of itself’. Have a goal, an ambition, but focus on and enjoy the process that you undertake to reach this. Get this right, do it for the right reasons, enjoy the process and you’ll reach your desired outcome. In my experience, sometimes focussing too heavily on the end product can lead to somewhat of a victim mentality, if unsuccessful or when faced with barriers or stumbling blocks along the way.

What value we are adding to the Organisation is vital to our visibility. There are multiple ways to do this in a software product development organisation :- 1. If you and your manager identify a new project/workflow improvement/architecture uplift which can provide significant business value, then go ahead and discuss with the leadership. You might need to come up with a proof of concept/something similar to articulate the value statements. 2. You can execute an existing project well before the timelines by using your technical / functional expertise combined with your interpersonal skills. Discuss this with your manager / leadership team and provide necessary data points. 3. You can come up with a new business case.

One thing about delivering exceptional results involves doing things on your own initiative without being asked. You would need to go over and beyond on assigned tasks and to do this, it involves a good understanding of the given task. So, understand the given task, deliver exactly on what is asked and go ahead to interject what you feel would be helpful to the person who assigned you the task.

Delivering quality work is fundamental to gaining positive visibility. Managers can list the name of their top performers at any given time. Top performers exceed objectives timely, consistently and deliver great customer service along the way (internal and/or external customers). Quality work extends beyond the individual's performance. It includes dedication to helping the team meet its' objectives. It's a willingness to step up, to assist peers, and sometimes to do what others are not willing to do. These employee names are brought up in "bench strength" discussions so when opportunities arise managers naturally think of them. Employees with a "good enough" mentality often don't think anyone notices, but are only fooling themselves.

The areas to focus on are learning to internalise your own achievements, and understanding why you find this hard. Often it is to do with learned behaviours that we acquired growing up. Maybe we were taught that 'showing-off' was bad, and we confuse talking effectively about our achievements as 'showing-off'. Perhaps the most inhibiting phrase our inner voice can repeat from childhood is "who does she think she is". If that is what you are telling yourself then childhood patterns of behaviour are limiting your adult success. Invest in the work to overcome that with a coach.

Be smart when you network, get to know people personally, not just what they may be useful for to you. Make sure they can remember who you are, what you do and why it matters

Networking is about connecting with others and building rapport. At the start, it is never about what the end goal is, but more about how well you can connect with someone else. Business is based on relationships and establishing trust and that does not happen instantly. When you establish a meaningful connection with someone, you are instantly more visible. So be real, be authentic and be yourself. Let people see the amazing person you are and the rest will happen!

I think it’s important to remember you have to offer something useful to whoever you’re networking with. Otherwise you’re simply another business card. Ask yourself why the person will grow to value you as a contact (strategic networking takes time) and what aspects of your knowledge, time or capability helps the person with their aims, or challenges. Many people treat networking as growing a list of important people but networking involves building mutual respect and trust.

Networking is the key. There are many free events, you can Google them or check on 'Eventbrite' relevant to your field. Prepare a couple of topics in advance, so you are able to discuss with others. Make connections in your field, introduce yourself on the LinkedIn invite and build on your network.

Don't underestimate the power of 'checking in' with team members and leadership regularly. It's a simple yet strategic way to stay on the radar and demonstrate your engagement.

"Consistency attracts invisibility". You won't appreciate your cook for cooking a great meal everyday. Gym coaches can't appreciate you everyday for your continuous efforts. You can't expect your wife to appreciate you for fixing the light bulb every time. That's the problem we have to hit to increase our visibility. In my case, I try to involve my Manager at some smaller milestones and seek their feedback on a bigger project even if I'm sure about what their response would be, or what's best for the project. It doesn't matter, I make them feel involved in every phase. The key is balance: I block 15 min or even less time for these reviews so they won't feel stressed in helping me but also feel involved, and included.

Find ways to give credit to others a shine a light on them. People like being recognized and appreciated, as long as it's done sincerely. Ideally, people should walk away from you feeling good about themselves. Work with someone who can teach you to delicately balance self-promotion and giving credit to others.
