1 Assess your current state

Before you can increase change readiness, you need to understand where you are now. How do your employees and stakeholders perceive the need for change, the benefits and risks, and their own roles and responsibilities? How do they cope with uncertainty, ambiguity, and stress? How do they communicate and collaborate with each other? You can use various tools and methods to assess your current state, such as surveys, interviews, focus groups, observations, or change readiness audits. The results will help you identify the gaps and opportunities for improvement.

2 Communicate your vision and strategy

One of the key factors that influence change readiness is the clarity and alignment of your vision and strategy. What is the purpose and direction of your change initiative? What are the expected outcomes and benefits? How will you measure and monitor progress? How will you address the challenges and risks? You need to communicate your vision and strategy clearly and consistently to your employees and stakeholders, using different channels and formats. You also need to listen to their feedback and concerns, and address them promptly and respectfully. Communication is not a one-way street, but a dialogue that builds trust and commitment.

Use these 5 CHANGE MODELS 1. The Bridges' Transition Model states that change requires individuals to go through 3 stages: endings, the neutral zone, and new beginnings. 2. Kotter's 8-Step Model: create urgency, form a coalition, develop a vision, communicate the vision, empower employees, create quick wins, consolidate improvements, and institutionalize new approaches. 3. Lewin's Change Model proposes a 3-step process: unfreeze, change, and refreeze. 4. The ADKAR Model emphasizes 5 outcomes: awareness of the need, desire to support, knowledge of how to change, ability to implement, and reinforcement to sustain. 5. McKinsey's 7-S Model highlights 7 factors for change: strategy, structure, systems, skills, staff, shared values, style.

3 Involve and empower your people

Another important factor that affects change readiness is the level of involvement and empowerment of your people. How do you engage and consult your employees and stakeholders in the design and implementation of your change initiative? How do you leverage their skills, knowledge, and ideas? How do you recognize and reward their contributions and achievements? You need to involve and empower your people in the change process, by creating opportunities for participation, collaboration, and co-creation. You also need to delegate authority and accountability, and provide support and guidance. Involvement and empowerment can increase ownership and motivation, as well as innovation and learning.

One of the things that organisations often fail to do is to support their colleagues through change. The following two models are fabulous to help managers support colleagues through any period of change, increasing the likelihood of success. House of Change - adapted and developed from Claes Janssen's original Four Rooms of Change that shows how people deal with change emotionally. The Kubler-Ross Change Curve is another great tool to support people through change. Originally developed to support people through the grief process, this has been adapted to support change of any type in the workplace. Change is always easier if you can get colleagues on board and have them buy in to the changes that you are making.

4 Develop your capabilities and resources

Change readiness also depends on the capabilities and resources of your organization. How do you equip your employees and stakeholders with the skills, knowledge, and tools they need to adapt and perform in the new situation? How do you allocate and manage your financial, human, and material resources to support your change initiative? How do you handle the competing demands and priorities of your ongoing operations and your change project? You need to develop your capabilities and resources, by providing training, coaching, mentoring, and feedback. You also need to plan and budget your resources, and balance your short-term and long-term goals.

Ensuring "change resilience" that complements the capabilities and resources. With the right amount and balance of capabilities, resources and prioritization, could resulted in resilience and paving the way for change readiness. Don't think that change readiness only as a "phase" but think of it as "iterative cycle" where your organization was ready at some point in change journey but falls back to become less-ready somewhere in the same timeline.

5 Cultivate your culture and values

Finally, change readiness is influenced by the culture and values of your organization. How do you foster a culture of openness, flexibility, and learning in your organization? How do you align your values and behaviors with your vision and strategy? How do you promote a positive and supportive work environment, where your employees and stakeholders feel valued, respected, and appreciated? You need to cultivate your culture and values, by modeling and reinforcing the desired attitudes and actions. You also need to celebrate and share your successes and lessons, and acknowledge and address your failures and issues.
