Values are not mere words (like honesty, trust, etc.) which everyone can relate to. What you value shows in how you use your time and money. Where are they most organized ? Talk about most often ? What do the people who inspire them most have in common? Once you have determined what your boss really values the most, seek to find how each one of your boss’ value is supporting your top values

Especially in the beginning you should set clear expectations with your boss. What I did in the past is sit down with them and tell them that I like to take my own decisions and will ask for feedback and help when I need it. I also mentioned that I like direct and helpful feedback to get better. Then I asked them if that was ok and what their communication style was. Do they want an update every day/week/year? Do they want to be invited to important meetings or can I handle this by myself? When will they provide feedback to you and can you give feedback to them? Talking about the qualitative approach to your relationships has served me incredibly well, complemented by quantitative measures like KPI's.

Use active listening, and not the kind you read about in most articles. Don't just lean in, and hold eye contact, and nod. Rather, let them know their words are landing on you by picking out key words in their statements and echoing them back. Let them know you want to be in alignment with them by echoing back their main points and asking them if you are hearing them correctly. Ask them what good support would look like.

As both are working professionals, here are some basic takeaways to consider: (1) there is no need to please our boss all the time. Don't have to agree or say yes to everything he/she says all the time. Learn to say No but be polite and humble. Explain reasons why we disagree or have a different opinion. That's absolutely ok. (2) learn to be pay attention to details on his/her leadership style and peculiarities. This will help us align and adjust the way we interact and communicate with him/her in a much more effective fashion. (3) let the boss know that you value his/her feedback all the time. Ask for feedback in every 1-on-1 session with him/her. (4) let the boss know that a 2-way interactive communication is healthy between both of you.
