The approach I take to getting to know my donors it actually quite simple: I genuinely foster friendships with them that extend far beyond the donation. I frequently have coffee, lunch, or dinner with my donors. They have been invited to my milestone events in my life including family celebrations. And for those that are into sports, we chat regularly about the latest ongoing in the NBA, NFL, etc. One of the first fundraising trainings I attended more than a decade ago left me with an unforgettable lesson: Treat your donors like human beings, not like an ATM. It makes a huge difference.

One of the best manners in which we have been able to communicate with our donors is through the use of video. In 2022, we hired a local videographer on a monthly retainer so that we could purposefully craft videos that would share the details of how donor investment in our organizational mission has left a positive impact on our state. We post these videos to our YouTube channel, social media accounts, and share the links in our email newsletters and directly with donors via text message. It has gone a long way to build donor confidence in our work.

People often forget that stewardship is the most important part of the giving cycle. A well-stewarded donor will give again with little prompting. Many donors don't like public recognition. They see the annual report for the huge money pit is can be. What the overwhelming majority prefer is to be told in a timely manner how their gift has been used. This is for donors from $1 to $1 million+. I have had tremendous success over the years with sending donors who have made a gift in the current fiscal year a quarterly postcard that I call "Your Gift at Work." One key area of accomplishment is spotlighted to illustrate impact. Donors love it. Although a BRE isn't included, second and third gifts always arrive as a result.

Regularly evaluate and improve how you are in building relationship. Donor relationship is a product of your overall relationship skills. Personal and professional don't live apart as much in our abilities the way they do in our minds. We live in a time where people won't give if they don't feel an authentic connection. Donor feedback is great, but what do the four-five people closest to you have to say about the way you move in your values? Do they find that you connect what you say to what you do?
