How can you improve R&D efficiency with DMADV?

Hello!? Just because you give something an acronym (Define, Measure, Analyze, Design, Verify) does not mean you are innovative or clever. Here is how research has been working for centuries (without the need for clever acronyms). 1. identify a problem that needs a solution. 2. come up with some ideas on how you might solve the problem. 3. execute your ideas, some may work some may fail, some may lead you on a new path. 4. modify your ideas according to your first set of findings, 5. repeat until you feel you have achieved your goal. The next person may look at your idea and figure a way to modify your findings into the next innovation. This is good old fashioned research and discovery.

L'approche DMADV offre un cadre pour l'innovation, mais sa pertinence varie très fortement selon les contextes industriels et académiques (innovations de ruptures, incrementales, latentes, spontanées...). Fort de 15 ans d'expérience en R&D, j'ai constaté que l'adaptation aux réalités spécifiques est cruciale. En particulier dans la génération d'optionalités de solutions à un problème donné afin de pouvoir faire un choix raisonné dans un contexte d'investissement incertain! Seule une faible fraction des projets de R&D atteint le marché, ce qui souligne le besoin d'approches plus subtiles qu'une transposition d'outils de production. Je suis ouvert à l'échange d'idées et de perspectives, cela fait partie de mon travail de consultant.

Se evalúan los riesgos y las capacidades del proceso de manufactura. Se establece cuáles son los KPI's más importantes. Se convierten msg necesidades del cliente en objetivos claros del proyecto. 3. Análisis. Se dise?an alternativas para satisfacer los requerimientos dentro de los límites. Se determinan los costos estimados del ciclo total del dise?o. 4. Dise?o. Se confirma que el dise?o satisface las necesidades. 5. Verificación. Se asegura que el producto o servicio sea parte de la actividad normal y se convierta en algo de largo plazo.

L'avantage de cette méthode est qu'elle fonctionne sur de l'innovation incrementale, centrée sur le besoin utilisateur (de l'amélioration de produit déjà existant), dans un contexte d'utilisation connu à faible prise de risque. Elle n'est en revanche selon moi que peu performante pour réduire le time to market parce qu'elle commence au moment où le client exprime son besoin. Il n'y a donc aucune anticipation comme le proposent d'autres méthodes.

Il existe de nombreux cadres d'innovation. Malheureusement celui la comme beaucoup d'autres pensent être une solution absolue sans tenir compte des ressources et des stratégies applicables qui sont tres différentes d'une entreprise à l'autre. Elle ne se repose pas non plus sur ce que les autres méthodes d'innovation ont d'intéressant en dehors de la méthode 6 sigma (qui n'a pas été pensée pour l'innovation). Quid des TRL, Triz et beaucoup d'autres ? Quid de l'humain et du contexte ? Comme s'il suffisait d'avoir une bonne idée pour qu'elle soit adoptée. Comme s'il ne fallait pas anticiper et que se mettre à travailler sur un problème une fois qu'il est formulé suffisait...

It is important to realize that black box solutions are not for every industry and every problem/project/product. Leaders need to be adaptable and be ready to pivot and reassess as needed.

I have found 2 problems with using a rigid, gated project solution. While it is ideal and certainly addresses scope creep and other pitfalls, if there are members of the team who are not familiar with the principles of Lean Six Sigma or the chosen gated path for the project then you wind up with confused project team members who struggle to understand the method and their role in the project. Needing someone not quite familiar with the process is often unavoidable. The other issue I have seen is that project teams can get stuck in one of the gates thinking they have more to accomplish when without the strictly defined gates they would be able to move forward.

Confronting these challenges entails employing AI-powered data management systems, blending agile principles with DMADV, and investing in AI education for R&D teams. Implementing iterative approaches, harnessing AI to refine solutions continuously, and nurturing an innovation-focused culture help surmount modern hurdles.

Effectively managing resources, streamlining processes, ensuring data reliability, communicating benefits early on, mitigating risks comprehensively, maintaining flexibility within the structure, controlling project scope, fostering diverse skills, and aligning with company culture are all essential for successfully overcoming DMADV challenges.

Adapting DMADV to suit flexible R&D frameworks, embracing emerging technologies like blockchain or IoT within the DMADV stages, fostering cross-functional collaboration among diverse teams, and aligning R&D objectives with sustainability goals are pivotal for maximizing its efficacy in the current R&D landscape.

From my experience, many ways will lead you to your Rome, to success. And it doesn't matter much what technique you are using. The main two points are: (1) You are willing to do something about your problems. You are willing to improve. (2) You are approaching this in a structured way. This can be DMADV or something else, as long as you are doing it with some structure. Many companies struggle already with (1), and even more with (2). Overcoming those two obstacles puts you already on the right path. Everything beyond that is already bonus ;)

An example of this framework might benefit a wider audience. In so far as I can foresee and if I cut the clutter of jargons and acronyms, the framework described here is classic R&D. I would be curious to read about an example.
