I think for a lot of us in technical roles the goal often becomes to describe things as technically as possible, because when we discuss wireless protocols, the question for the technical expert becomes “which one?” When a layperson, or an individual with low literacy is the target audience, generalization and simplicity are essential in conveying complex topics.

A perfect example is a preschool aged child, who hasn’t learned to read yet, using an AI assistant like Alexa. I have learned more about how to use Alexa watching my 4 year old toddler interact with the device, than I have reading articles on how to use the darn thing. Low literacy does not equate to low intelligence and it is important to consider this when communicating technical information to low literacy individuals.

How we use technology to complete a task shouldn’t get in the way of the goal. If it were difficult or complex to use a hammer to drive a nail, we would intuitively reach for a better solution, not continue to use the hammer.
