How can you improve collaboration between your R&D lab and other departments?

Integration of all Departments within organization is cruciual to achive mandated Goals. The role of all departments is important, the R&D role is to develope new product/s on the basis of requirments of the customers of particuler organization. Quality assurance is also required to satisfy the customers.

Along with all the work related and goal related alignment across cross-functional teams, being an R&D person, I felt that it's very important to maintain a healthy and friendly relationship with team members from other departments. Don't just reach out to them only when you need them. Build the relationship at the workplace, it can be in a meeting, sports event, annual day celebration, or even a short chat in the canteen may help you.

The best method I found in my organization in motivating all the employees from all the departments was INCENTIVE MOTIVATION. I have introduced an incentive scheme for all the employees without any discrimination. This had worked well. In a month, of course, I do not remember the month and year now, every employee got almost 1/3rd of their salary as an incentive. Our production of Ranitidine HCl, an anti-ulcer drug had gone up from just 50 MT to 400 MT/ month making our company one of the largest manufacturers of the bulk drug. I would contend the section within Research Institutions that knows most about what is happening in other research units, is the Knowledge Transfer Office. The convergence of technologies often doesn't override the fact that for example Electronic Engineering and Computer Science may publish their work on the *same* topic, but in *different* journals and conferences.

There should be one intra department person who knows atleast basics of R&D and other units such as management, production, engineering,IP etc. This person must convey point of views of each department with other department. Also, it could be good have small duration internship to each people from R&D to understand some basics of all other departments to convey their communication in their language ( their words). I found in a biotech company that operating the R&D at the same quality standard as the rest of the organisation opens upon a natural collaboration pathway. You're on the same page about employee training, documentation and other processes such a procurement. You also gain more staffing flexibility which allows for the cross functional teams mentioned earlier in the article.
