How can you identify which resources to add to your library collection?

This in-depth analysis enables the accurate identification of needed resources, preferred formats, and relevant topics, guiding acquisitions to effectively meet the community's demands.

One of the library science laws of Dr. Ranganathan states that "every book its reader" and "library is a growing organism". The gist of collection development should rely on this principles and each library needs to have set of collection development policy targeting its readers. The collection should be focussed on information needs of its users and it should be updated all the time. there are different needs of academic libraries based on their programs and curriculam offered, public library have different requirement, research libraries have different set of users and so on.

Social media is one important way I learn about new books for my school library. I have particular people that I trust. However I do confirm those recommendations with reviews. I also read a lot!!!

I always check reviews when ordering. If you are in the school market, having a Titlewave or a Mackin.com account is imperative because they aggregate full-text reviews within their ordering tools. You can also search by the number of reviews you want your items to use. The Florida Electronic Library purchases the Gale Books and Authors, a phenomenal source of professional reviews. It's available to anyone in Florida with a Florida public library card or working for a Florida academic institution (K-13). I have subscriptions to Booklist and Library Journal specifically for the reviews, and the college I work for subscribes to Choice Reviews.

Even though the library offers a digital book version, certain users favour a physical copy. In these instances, the library can obtain the hard copy Based on the user's request.

Before adding any resources, the type of patrons need be checked, the needs of the patron needs to be evaluated and the cost of the resources, library spaces , all these needs to be considered before adding resources.

Once you have identified potential resources to add to your library collection, it's important to evaluate them based on your selection criteria and policy. Social media is very powerful among today's generations and is a great medium to promote your library collections. Instagram, facebook, tik tok can be used extensively to promote the collection. Apart from that library portal can be used along with other medium such as email and whatsapp group can also be used. Another most important way of promoting library collections is through information literacy sessions and regular oreintation of the users. Organizing book week, book month, book club, author's visit, book fair etc can also promote library and its collection.

Making a new arrival list of newly added books based on the subject or topic (Gender, Anthropology etc.) helps users find books from their area of interest.

For my young students, book talks and putting books forward facing on tops of shelves and display racks are so important. I highlight new books in many ways.

Promoting the collection is one of the most integral parts of librarianship. People need to know what's on your shelf to come looking for it. I think using social media to connect with your patrons is key. Develop flyers and book displays to help draw the eye to what's available in the library.

Thanks to social media, now we can publish and share our collection wider. we can create gimmick like book share (by influencer or lecturer or best employee) to attract more visitors.

From my experience as a school librarian, I try to regularly check if books match school topics, are diverse, and suitable for different ages. I also ask for feedback, stay updated on educational trends, and update the collection yearly.

You have to know your community. Even though a book has great reviews, it still needs to be a fit for your community. You also need to keep your views out of the selection process. As librarians, we must be agnostic regarding our personal views when selecting books for our collections. A good collection will let every patron see themselves in the pages of a book. It is not your place to put your values on the books to ensure that everyone and all views are included.
