A key initial step in identifying and analyzing a potential software bug is to ascertain whether a suspected client-facing error is, in fact, a bug, as opposed to a human mistake or data hole. For example, data errors in Excel might be manifested as #REF, #NA or #VALUE errors. Such errors might occur because a user inadvertently deleted rows or cell entries, or used incorrect data categories, rather than stemming from a software bug.

1. Analysis always starts with reproducing the issue when possible and working directly with the issue owner to identify the steps. This can help identify procedural issues rather than system issues and save research efforts for you and the developer team. 2. Review the open issue backlog to ensure that the reported issue hasn't already been identified, and is being addressed, again saving time and effort. 3. Once the issue has been verified and documented, then it is time to evaluate the impacts to the system-identified along with upstream feed or logic issues and downstream impacts. (Reporting is a big miss in these reviews.) 4. Attempt to identify the first occurrence and narrow down needed data etc. corrective actions.
