How can you identify the right Lean Six Sigma projects?

A lean Six Sigma project must be linked with any of the below objectives: 1.customer complaint reduction/ warranty reduction 2. Waste reduction 3. Cost reduction 4. Productivity improvements 5. Material planning improvement 6. Breakdown eliminations. The project should consider bigger issues rather than the small small department level improvements

To identify the potential lean six sigma project, one can look into balance score card which has KPI metrics on Financial, customer, internal process and learning & growth aspects. Any KPI related to these aspects is not meeting the target can be the potential lean six sigma project as it is aligned with strategic priorities of the organizations.

While it's possible to apply Lean six sigma methodologies to a myriad type of projects, these methods are typically more effective when solving complex, abstract systemic challenges. MY Recommendation: Use project management development approaches ( waterfall, agile, iterative, & incremental) when solving problems whose solutions are known and DMAIC when dealing with abstract solutions

My approach for selecting lean six sigma projects is to go to the most significant pain points in processes. These are the areas causing the most inefficiency and challenges. By addressing these big issues, we're essentially tackling the root causes of problems and have the biggest efficiency gains. At the same time, I keep an eye out for quick wins / “low hanging fruits”. These are the smaller improvements that can be implemented relatively easily and show results fast. This helps demonstrating the effectiveness of our efforts.

Validation typical helps to ascertain that your solving for the right problem, and that there is actual baseline data to prove that!

Further while considering the right six sigma project there must be the - 1. unknown root cause and unknown solution for the problem. 2. Problem must be complex. 3. The performance of the KPI is constantly not meeting the target. ( at least 3 data points should be considered).
