I have some luck when I start my career as a trainee at the global MNC. In the trainee program, I learn from the best people, grow with peer trainees, and get kind and welcome from my colleagues and mentors. I am so impressed with the career path that the company shows me. My learning styles are a mix of visual, auditory, and auditory digital. My core competencies are planning, organizing, people and system development, approachability, resilience, driving for results, negotiation, and customer focus. In addition, my area of expertise is T&D in the Retail and FMCG industry. However, I continuously explore other areas in HR.

There are lots of different roles in Learning & Development and it's interesting to explore what excites & inspires you; Instructional Design, Facilitation, Org Development, Leadership Development, etc.. The challenge/goal is to find the role that truly energizes you. In some cases, that can be in a small/medium size or where you get to do a little of everything or one of the nuanced roles. Explore them all, play around so you have knowledge in all areas with a focus in specific elements. That will make you a well-rounded, valuable part of the business.

A key aspect to consider is that T&D exists to serve the needs of the business and not on its own. It is therefore important for anyone intending to build their career in T&D or L&D to also build deep mastery of the business

T&D is about preparing workforce & developing talent. HR is about company-wide payroll, employee policies and performance management practices. The CPTD credential by ATD USA has a competency framework to identify the right career path. For example, I chose Training Delivery Specialization as it aligned with my role, VARK and Multiple Intelligences orientation. Further on, I developed an affinity for Instructional Design.
