My 1st mentoring experience, as a mentor, was 12 years ago. In my experience, some of the best mentor/mentee relationships reach across different functions and are more about the people than the job descriptions. I have always been a strong supporter of words over action. So I value employees who can take initiative. This preference has been a powerful tool in driving independence. Even though more attentiveness is needed from the start. The idea is for them to get to a point where they can simulate a problem scenario, walk it through from A-Z, and think of solutions. Based on the resources and guidance given at the start, of course. Evaluating fit is easier once you have set up your mentee with all the physical resources you have and observe how they navigate challenges intuitively. Allow room for fast failure to work in those lessons. The faster they can adapt to this setup without your supervision and management, the greater the fit.

Mentoring often involves providing constructive feedback. Observe whether individuals are open to receiving feedback and working on improving themselves. Those willing to accept and act on feedback are more likely to be receptive mentees. Look for individuals who strongly desire to learn and grow, personally and professionally. They may proactively seek knowledge, ask questions, or express an interest in self-improvement. Eagerness to learn is a good indicator that someone is receptive to mentorship.

#1 thing I wouldn’t do is cold email to ask someone to be your mentor. Ideally, you’ve personally talked to them and like them. It’s one thing to admire someone without meeting them and another to have a conversation with them and still feel the same way! Then, I’d ask for help, involve them in your career on a specific problem or issue you’re working through. Most importantly, be ready to hear feedback. You are looking for a mentor vs a cheerleader, that means sometimes they will tell you what you don’t want to hear but need to hear. It’s a gift and usually means you have great mentor.

That question is completely wrong. It is the other way around: mentees have to find you. Whether you are part of a mentor program in your firm or not is irrelevant, prospective mentees will have to find some sort of match based on your credentials, communication style, usefulness, reputation etc.
