How can you identify and address gaps in teacher and staff training on a learning management model?

We need to divest ourselves of the notion that there are models. There are only teachers and students. Also, we do not "train" teachers. We train rats in a Skinner box and we train dogs. We educate teachers. As well, we need to trust teachers to identify their own "gaps". It's all about empowering teachers.

It's very important to have a structured work plan with goals. Assess each goal and look for areas that require up skilling and park the observation for professional developments programs. Inviting experts to train staff and team building programs work brilliantly for my team. A lot gets done in a less stressful environment. The output and inputs become mutual which indirectly heightens service delivery and team confidence.

If you are trying to improve teacher training begin with helping teachers instead of judging them.

In my opinion it is crucial to know the learning level of students before looking at bridging the learning gap. Teachers can organize a basic diagnostic assessment before they start a new session. This will help the teachers know the current level of the students. They can then work on focus areas as per the students’ requirements. A bridge course is meant to overcome the learning gap between students by focusing on their fundamental abilities. It is recommended to train the teachers before implementation of the bridge courses for the best desired results. Also with the Personalized learning approach where teachers tailor their teaching methods to the individual needs of each student can also help tremendously for better learning.

Developing a training strategy is important, but it is also important to build flexibility into your training strategy. Everyone learns a little differently and thus it is essential that you are not so rigid with your strategy that you are incapable of switching your approach to accommodate the various needs of your students. The training strategies are merely guides to help you accomplish the learning objectives, but you should be able to alter your approach if it is not quite working out as planned. Remember that the training strategies are there to help your students and it should never be hindering their learning experience.

In this phase, it is important to think about how to multiply your impact in several ways. For example, consider the ways the learning objectives are aligned to the strategic plan of the organization. Identify and elevate that so that everyone knows that we're working towards a common goal and vision. This helps to keep the main thing the main thing. Next is to encourage innovation and leadership opportunity by elevating talent in the school or district whether it is through brainstorming sessions or facilitation. With any facilitation, we must make sure that we are modeling the behaviors that we want to be replicated in real time. Finally collect feedback consistently and use it to make changes and tell people about the changes.

This should include a blend of content, innovative delivery methods (look towards non-formal education methods and edutech solutions), and a flexible timeline, ensuring alignment with both the LMM's requirements and your unique learning objectives.

In my experience, continual coaching and support play a crucial role. Ensuring that staff members are consistently heard fosters a singular focus on their goals, providing an opportunity to apply practical information without feeling overwhelmed. Our emphasis on ongoing coaching aims to humanize the work. Which requires constant and continuous attention. It’s a process not a project.

The ongoing support and coaching often times looks best when people can actually see it being done. So to that end, having staff in your building who can model what should happen in the classroom will work best. After every modelling session, then a debrief should occur, so that the other teachers can identify what works and the modelling teacher can explain what they’re thinking is and why it is valuable.

I agree with many of the other posts. Primarily an open communication model is everything- an environment where teachers can ask and question everything and vulnerability is promoted. Secondly, look at our strengths and weaknesses first. Some training is redundant. Lastly, education goes in “baby and the bath water” trends. This is what we’re changing to, discard everything, adapt. We need to be allowed to discuss in which situations new training/ materials/ techniques should be used as well as the old.

I recall reading once, that teaching is not the process akin to filling an empty bucket, meaning that you simply deliver knowledge. Rather, it is more akin to building a fire. Constantly attending to, adding fuel and stoking the process. Ignite the students imagination, and add more substantial challenges all whilst stoking their curiosity. Don't give answers, but instead, ask questions and let them explore the topic of interest.

Responsive leadership understands that things are always changing. The question becomes how we can find the patterns of change and respond effectively and when possible proactively. Creating systems for ongoing feedback from our stakeholders is important. When the feedback is implemented or some version of it is implemented, celebrate the innovator(s) and compensate when possible. People need to know that the ideas are valued and that their investment in ensuring the strategic goals are achieved is appreciated.

In my opinion and based on experience, understanding industry expectations and learning styles of the current learners are key factor redesigning the curriculum/training modules. Post that, we can work on LMM and training methods.

One way of ascertaining the gap is to ask your learners to prepare a FAILURE RESUME. Ask them to list out the number of times they have tried to create and failed. You will be surprised at the results. If you're learners find it hard to fill the failure resume - you know for sure that you need to go back to the drawing board and start working at setting up a culture of learning and innovation, within your organization

When I was a State Education Administrator, I conducted hundreds of teacher and staff training programs. Then, unlike the usual professional sequence (e.g. from teacher to administrator), I became a teacher where it quickly became obvious that much of the training I had done was not appropriate; did not apply. I came to the conclusion that State Administrators should spend a half year to a year every 3-5 years in the classroom or at a local school level, where the education “rubber meets the road,” in order to re-acclimate their training content and relevance.

Professional learning goes back to relationship building at its core. It is personal and it affects more than just the workplace. Acknowledging that means we have a responsibility to make sure that professional learning is both collaborative and personalized. Opportunities to converse about new learning is important for the synthesis and retention of the knowledge as an individual and as an organization. Co-creation is the best buy-in you can get to sustain transformational change. I think of the old adage of Give a man a fish, he eats for a day; but teach a man to fish and he eats for a lifetime. Building sustainable systems is the legacy of transformational change.

Professional learning and development opportunities go hand in hand ???? So let’s start PERSONALISING professional learning ???? For me it’s important to show staff that the development is not just to meet CPD hours. It’s to improve their knowledge, skills and pedagogy as well as to meet the teaching standards. However, when we want to create culture of self-development, yes we need to provide CPD opportunities but also make it relevant. How many times have we been part of the same CPD which doesn’t add value? An example is marking and feedback. Recently we have made 5 levels of CPD for this topic and each allows PERSONALISED learning opportunities for staff. They all work on different aspects of marking and feedback.

LMM should be open to hybrid mode of learning. This would give a lot of flexibility to both the teacher as a learner and the management as provider. Also, while self-paced learning is good, there has to be some accountability in terms of completion of modules enrolled into.

Our whole team are involved in identifying gaps and suggestions about how professional learning could help. It may seem trivial, but this is so important in building a culture that has our own learning as its core. This also makes learning tailored to your improvements as a school and team, as well as personal to the individual so that they are supported to help the whole team meet the improvements too.
