How can you help your mentee stand out in their field?

In my experience, i have learned that you as a mentor should ensure you have mutual respect with the mentee, trust, some shared values and most important is good communication. In most cases mentors have a lot of experience, knowledge and exposure but passing this information to mentees depends on your communication skills (effective ways of communication). Mentees should be guided to be self-organizing, self-thinkers, decision makers. It is also encouraging to allow mentee seeks guidance from anywhere so long as you are available to guide to achieve their objectives and goals. Always lead by example and be a servant leader than authoritative. This way, your mentee (less experience) will emerge a better practitioner in the industry.

Here are some ways you can assist your mentee in achieving distinction: Set Clear Goals: Work with your mentee to establish clear and achievable short-term and long-term goals. Identify Strengths and Weaknesses: Help your mentee identify their strengths and weaknesses. Develop a Personal Brand: Assist your mentee in defining and showcasing their unique value proposition. This involves identifying their strengths, skills, and qualities that set them apart from others.

Take time to understand your mentee's strengths, passions, and skills. Encourage them to develop their unique talents and expertise. Provide opportunities for them to practice and showcase their strengths.

Building a personal brand starts with helping a mentee identify who they really are and what is the voice they want to project to the world. This discovery process can be repeated at various stages through the mentorship relationship as new insights will bring out new areas they would like to focus on. Beyond this, it's important to encourage consistency in their branding efforts, seeking multiple perspectives in their efforts to build a brand from their network and supporting others in order to receive that reciprocation as they're building their own brand.

One of the most important things you can provide a mentee is the foundation of how to tell their story in a memorable, succinct, and authentic way. Helping them articulate their background, their values, and their strengths in a compelling way can set them up for incredible success. As a mentor, you can leverage your network and connections to provide your mentee with space to practice telling their story and receiving real-time feedback. You can set up a coffee meeting with your mentee and 2 or 3 of your colleagues and ask your mentee to give an elevator pitch. Ask your colleagues to share what they took away from that pitch and how they would describe your mentee’s “brand.” This gives your mentee feedback and insights they can use.

Telling about ourselves always multiplies our value. It can be promoting ourselves or the achievements that we had, that always adds up at the end. The ideal strategy for building our personal brand is obviously Social Media. Online presence is so important, but while building a personal brand We have to make sure that the platform that we were choosing a line with the goals that we have. Say LinkedIn is a very good professional networking platform and having a personal brand or starting to build a personal brand on LinkedIn, Really is a very good idea if you are looking for a new job or you're looking for business leads. Being cautious of the platform we choose is the key.

For most people especially those starting out, shy away from talking about or demonstrating their skills or strengths. For example one can be technically good , but how can potential recruiters know this especially in platforms like LinkedIn? Put your skills out there. You can attend events or hackathons, share your skills or showcase your projects online for people to see. Apply to be a speaker and share your ideas, knowledge and experience. I love the idea of putting yourself out there so that people know who you are. I believe when you do you will meet people interested in what your do or your skills or event your first investor.

Help your mentee set clear, SMART goals that align with their career aspirations. Work with them to develop actionable plans to achieve their goals. Provide ongoing support and accountability as they work towards their objectives. Share your expertise and insights to help your mentee navigate challenges and make informed decisions. Provide constructive feedback on their work, encouraging them to continuously learn and improve. Challenge them to think outside the box and explore new ideas and approaches.

Helping a mentee to focus on their strengths and find innovative ways to showcase them is a great way to ensure that they further develop their natural inclination. A good rule of thumb is to ask a mentee to shortlist 3-5 skills or areas of interest where they either have expertise or would like to develop this expertise further. Whenever an opportunity comes up to be involved in a presentation, project or work with a scope that covers one of those key areas, encourage them to volunteer to be part of that work. Over time, make sure you encourage the mentee to take lead on some of these projects as it will help them further build their confidence in their skill.

Showcasing expertise is a part of building a personal brand. If you want to be social media influencer, then you have to create content which is related to the niche, so that people will be attracted to the content that you're posting. In return, that gives credibility to the content that you are posting and you will be considered as an expert because you have shown your expertise in what you are good at. This not only applies to just posting content or being an influencer. This applies to every field where you want an expert at. But the approach that we have to choose differs from field to field. It totally depends on the depth of the field that we are going in.

The very few skills that can be learned in networking are: - perfect a pitch (can be about themselves, a product they are trying to sell, etc) - prioritise a call to action/follow up in every interaction - have a well polished LinkedIn (or other if more appropriate) account

I think Career Mentors should be able to remove obstacles and help their mentees overcome barriers in their career to the best of their ability - and something often that comes up is networking and meeting the "right" people. And while networking is quite commonly prioritized when it comes to career development, there is good reason for this - networking creates leads, it creates doors for future career options, and it gives you access to resources, information, and projects that help further careers. For students, this is especially important as internships are hard to come by and leads, projects, and resources are great things to receive as a result of networking.

Networking with new people is not the toughest job in the world. Networking starts from around you. It's the way you talk with people who are around you, than searching for a place to network. If you are looking for a place to network there are many such opportunities for you like the place you work, the school you attend and many more. There are people everywhere and we don't know who has what story in them. As there is a saying, "Don't judge a book by its cover". We never know who has what story to say. And who will help you to be an expert in the field that you have selected. My only suggestion is talk with people. Wherever you find them, it can be online offline or wherever you are. People are everywhere just talk with them.

My mentees and team members have found this simple strategy highly effective: learning is everywhere hence it is continuous, it does not have to be completing a course, reading many books. It can simply start with reading short articles, listening to pods, watching a documentary, and having a conversation with somebody who is knowledgeable in that topic. Identify what works for you, and just start doing it. It will be conscious effort at the beginning, but it will become a habit, it will feed your interest, and trigger more learning. Upping your knowledge game will up your vocabulary and elevate your confidence; it is a fast track to professional success.

While learning is important, someone who learns just for learnings sake is often over-looked in the corporate environment. Unless they already hold a senior position, it's typically perceived that they never graduate from student status and this can impede on their career progression. Instead, foster a genuine curiosity about the world around you and the people in it. Be open-minded and value the insights from others. And if/when you encounter an area that stretches you in new or uncomfortable ways, then up-skill. THIS is how you become magnetic.

The best challenge that one can take up in their life is listening to feedback or getting judged. Because those are the toughest things that one can go through. Doing a work is an ordinary thing but getting feedback for that is a bit hectic. Go ahead and listen to people, ask them what they have to say about the performance that you have put up that they are the speech that you have delivered or the content that you've posted online. It can be anything people are everywhere to give feedback or to judge you. Now here is a catch. It totally depends on you whether if you take it constructively or negatively. My only suggestion is constructive feedback always helps you to be a better person. Feedback is the breakfast of the champions.

There is a consistent want to hold the next generation’s (my generation’s) hand. I see it to often with students I coach. The most crucial point is to give them the tools and allow them to figure it out. I cannot write resumes for students who visit me, but I can give them everything they need to do it themselves. If I give them the tools, they can go on to grow and fill in the gaps they notice. Another crucial aspect is making sure the mentee knows they can ask questions. Questions are vital to growth, and if you never ask, you’ll never grow.

Introduce your mentee to relevant books, articles, podcasts, and online communities. Connect them with mentors, advisors, and other professionals in their field. Help them access training programs, workshops, and conferences that can enhance their skills and knowledge. Highlight your mentee's achievements and contributions within your network and professional circles. Recommend them for awards, scholarships, or other opportunities that recognize their talents. Write letters of recommendation or provide testimonials to support their professional endeavors.

Para chegar ao resultado esperado, é preciso um plano de a??o. O processo de mentoria se concretiza quando há um plano a ser cumprido, com resultados, metas e objetivos claros e indicadores a serem atingidos. Sem isso, há apenas uma vontade de realizar alguma coisa, um bate-papo, uma troca de ideias, sem nada de efetivo, muito menos algo que seja possível acompanhar, avaliar, mensurar.

For students, I often find that they try to network during the recruiting season and while that might seem appropriate, it often leads to disingenuous coffee chats and solicitation. Instead, I often recommend to students that a more efficient approach is to network/coffee chat with those in their field, early career professionals, and recruiters a full recruiting season ahead of time. You'll focus less on asking for referrals and opportunities and a bit more on the actual conversations, which is usually much more preferred. And whenever the time comes for a referral, activating these connections will feel a bit more organic as you won't be doing it cold.
