How can you help theater directors bring their vision to life on stage?

Think of a theater director as a spark that ignites a team, providing the overall vision of a project, and working with each contributor to enhance the whole, and reach the final project. An important part of theatrical collaboration is communication and a willingness to be flexible. As part of the overall production team (which includes designers actors, and technicians/backstage crew) it helps when everyone understands the goals. This means reading the script, attending design meetings and/or rehearsals, asking questions, contributing ideas, experimenting, and exploring. The best directors help guide this "creative chaos" toward the final production, supported by the skills and experience of their team.

My experience has been to share my emotions, images, thoughts to the designer at our initial meeting. Sometimes I know I need physical attributes to the design of the stage (eg. I needed some levels for an abstract work)Then I trusted the set designer to come up with a design. In the case of the above work the set designer was already contracted and not my choice as I didn't know them.But I trusted that they would come up with a concept that we could collaborate on once they presented me with their design. I would highly suggest a maquette for the final decision. I couldn't interpret which view was upstage, downstage and the aerial view was so confusing with the 2-D diagram.

The director is the captain of the ship, or the coach of the team. They hold both the major direction and the specific path in their heads, from the first spark of an idea, to opening night, and the sometimes long and winding path inbetween.

Absolutely true and necessary in team projects. Like a clockwork, every aspect of a theatre piece is intertwined and interdependent.

Understanding a directors vision and concept for a theatrical production effectively collaborating with them is very key. As an actor, one needs to analyze scripts with the concept in mind and see how best this can bring the characters to life, to best suit the concept.

Utilize the power of improv. Playing with the moments in a script that hook the audience can deepen the effect and open up new ideas for everything from set design to costumes to staging.

As Artistic Director of a small hall PAC I was helped hire directors. Two had what sounded like great visions for their respective productions, but execution was pathetic. Two weeks before opening night I was at a rehearsal, and witnessed comments and behavior that was totally unacceptable. After the rehearsal I gathered the cast together and asked them what was going on. They shared being screamed at, called names, belittled.... The cast said they got together on their own to rehearse because they believed in the show and the venue. The other director was even worse with her behavior. The shows were successful, the cast pulled together, the experienced actors helping others were the reason. Methods to report abuse were implemented.

A stage director is also a team leader. Especially in a creative setting, you want to provide enough space for your teammates to be creative while at the same time align with your creative vision. Communication skills becomes crucial here. Make sure that all the communications in the creative setting is two-way dynamic. Embrace your teammates contribution, and let them inspire you.

The director is the key communicator to the cast and the designers and other creatives. They all must hear one voice. The producer, however, has approval of all decisions, creative and financial. The core team of authors, director and producer work together and collaborate closely. Meetings with clear agendas allowing for input will help focus the team.

Of course, this is the minimum in society and it extends to every work, whether is creative or not. In the best of scenarios, everyone in the team should have the same goal, which is the artistic success.

If you're an actor; DO THE WORK. Break down the script how you need. Analyze it how you need. And confer with the director. Being a professional actor means showing up prepared. To that end, it is imperative that at least someone on the production team (producers, director, casting director) knows of any difficulties/limitation that are usually experienced when working on a show so that accommodations can be made. As well, from the top down, an environment must be fostered so that people involved feel safe to meet challenges. Production ideally is encouraging the notion that not everyone is the same, and celebrating the balancing of everyone's strengths and foibles. This is true professionalism.

Important is also to create a creative atmosphere, circumstances in which a creative process is supported by and for its collaborators.

We're talking about teamwork. Not only does the director suffer in certain phases of production, but also the entire team and especially the actors. They often have a much greater responsibility in the artistic implementation of the ideas. Emotional support could consist of dramaturgical work and the understanding that a production is never the work of one director alone. Everyone helps each other throughout the entire production process and also contributes emotionally to the success of a theater production.

Creative process can become stressful sometimes. And a special thing about Theatre production is that it is very difficult to continue to creative process when atmosphere is wrong. In the theater company that I run, I introduced the conflict mediator position in the third year. They have only one responsibility - check in with each department regularly and encourage transparency within between departments. Most of the time they are just there sharing happy time with the team, but they become very handy when situation arise. This is one of the suggestion if resource allows.

Create a trusting, open, and caring atmosphere from the very first reading of the text. Foster a 'family' atmosphere and therefore, actors will trust you, their director, and each other more deeply. This helps the overall quality of the atmosphere immensely. And humour helps! Everyone must keep their sense of humour to help create a convivial atmosphere both onstage and offstage.

Biggest thing with this is to tell them what you like and what you don’t. Most directors will recognize that wether you are hired or not, you still are an audience member and one that has seen A LOT of shows and telling them you really like what they did with that scene could really give them a lot of confidence in the production we’re building.

Be clear and concise with your feedback to actors, and make sure they understand the feedback and how to apply it to their craft. Also, avoid sugar coating, it does no one any good and doesn't help the process. Say what you mean, clearly, concisely, with diplomacy but also honesty.

Inspire your actors. They must trust you and your vision must be clearly laid out based on the text of the play. The actors can only ever navigate the text. Encourage your design team to support the actors and make the whole company feel the vision is important to the time and to society.

A commercial theater production is often a long haul - years in the making. Can include changes in creatives and cast over time. You want to make sure your can work together and are compatible, so selection of the team is crucial. Since authors own the work with the producer optioning it, the authors are often the only constant. Without the producer, however, a vision can rarely be fulfilled.

It’s really the producer’s role to keep the entire production on track and collaborate effectively with the director to get their vision across, supporting them and guiding the overall vision to align with the business direction of the production.
