It should also address a gap or problem in the existing literature, or offer a new perspective or approach to an existing issue. You can help your students narrow down their topic by asking them to brainstorm keywords, questions, and themes related to their field of interest. You can also suggest some sources of inspiration, such as films, genres, directors, theories, concepts, or debates.

I did in the past on occasions, informally though. I mean, there were a few uncredited 'help' from my end. However, 'better research proposals' are conditional on grantmaking possibilities and (Northern) professors' inclination toward issues. More often than not, film studies proposals are 'evaluated' on an area studies framework, especially if submitted by students from the Global South. The professors/funders would like what Prof. Hamid Naficy once mentioned as 'accented' cinema. In brief, I would suggest two things for the Southern students: 1. Don't try studying products by the North (will be discouraged); 2. Select movies and visual products that characterize 'local' traits that 'attract' the 'diversity' advocates. Be pragmatic.

2 Do a literature review

6 State the expected outcomes

The sixth step is to help your students state the expected outcomes that indicate what they hope to achieve or contribute with their research. Outcomes are the results or implications that the research anticipates or expects to generate or produce in relation to the research question and objectives. They should be realistic, relevant, and original. They should also be clear, concise, and coherent. You can help your students state their expected outcomes by asking them to summarize their main findings or arguments, discuss their significance or impact, and suggest some recommendations or directions for future research.
