How can you help students avoid plagiarism and maintain academic integrity?

I love the idea of designing plagiarism proof assignments but that's becoming more challenging given the amount of info available - including assignments and solutions- and also the availability of genAI tools to help. What I've found useful is playing with GPT to create the assignment. I explain the topic and points I want to make and then ask it to suggest sample assignments. I then pick the best ones, get the AI to answer it, and iterative tweak it to improve the assignment, making it more and more difficult to get a good AI reply. Sounds like a lot of work but it's not really and it's kind of fun. If it's hard for the AI, it's challenging for the students and forces them to think carefully and write well. IMHO

Try to read more and more... to develop the concept so that you cam phrase your ow words.. plagiarism is just cheating or stealing the things without acknowledging the original stakeholders. It illegal, unethical and strictly prohibited in science.

Intelligence is about imagination, not knowledge, we need to teach students to think for themselves and not regurgitate our teachings. If we can do that then plagiarism becomes redundant.

Explain the importance of citing sources and giving credit to the original authors and provide clear guidelines and examples of how to cite sources in different formats. Emphasize the value of academic honesty and the consequences of academic misconduct.

Model appropriate use of technology in research, scaffold assignments to teach students how not to plagiarize and to reduce stress that lead to plagiarism

Students need to understand that simply copying the content from Wikipedia or showing the google screenshot as evidence is also plagiarism. They need to learn to cite their sources and learn to write them as sources for example as quotes from the website

plagiarism consists of copying other people's work and changing only a part of it to make it look original. you should check for - similar technical words - same sound - same tone now many online checkers help with plagiarism

Examples of plagiarism are copy-pasting any material from the Web, Journal Article, Electronic Article, or anything available belonging to some other scientists or researchers. If you paraphrased the same thing by using bots it's still plagiarism, but it's counted in similarity in some countries. You can use sources like pictures in your articles if they are open access but citation and recommendation is a must. if it's not in open access proper permission should be availed.

Rather than having them to write a report which is boring as per student perspective, the learner should be involved in a task that would require them to read through or see a whole video and answer the questions

Go to the library for assistance when struggling with citation. Our libraries and librarians are vastly underutilized in the collegiate setting. Many students learn APA formatting in an English 100 class; however, a student may need to apply that lesson in upper level courses i.e. nursing presentations or papers. A robust review of APA formatting would be beneficial for these students. Many students are quick to jump to the Internet for formatting questions and forget that they have a wonderful resource at the library.

Frame the formality as classy rather than rigid rules. Cursive = classy writing Citation = classy shoutouts Everyone will agree that we should give credit where it's due, not only to obey the rules.

If you have cited a source you can use proper tools like Mendeley and Endnote. You can Seek further guidance from your Seniors or Teachers as well as professors. Simple APA style is like (Shahid et al., 2021) this is an in-text citation style. if it is in the start then it would be like this. Shahid et al. (2021) stated that plagiarism is not good for scientific writing. Different software will the work for you as aformentioned.

I wholeheartedly disagree with the ideology that we must accept a portion of plagiarism/AI involvement for student work. Regardless of presentations, research papers, or any other assignments handed in, the student should always be producing their original work. Otherwise, how can we truly assess the intended student learning outcome was met? Also, this is fundamentally concerning for any student who is working towards a profession where documentation and the integrity of that documentation is vital. I.e. doctors, nurses, lawyers, engineers, etc. As instructors, we must accept that students will be utilizing AI as a tool, but we must refrain from allowing the “computer to do the work for them.”

Its better to accept that fact that students will use AI and plagiarism will be in their work. But we need to change the way we mark them as to check for the methodology that they have used to leverage the work done by the AI

assignments that challenge the brains of students and their critical thinking assignments should take some amount of research and effort to be completed provide them with real-life and current events assignments so that they can't copy from public sources and they will have to come up with their own research and facts

First of all, develop a classroom culture where students themselves hate coping material from different sources. Give them some Critical thinking assignments. Don't give them blunt topics, give them something that needs mental exercise. Ask them to contribute positively.

A citation manager is an invaluable tool for students to uphold academic integrity and avoid plagiarism by aiding in source organization, generating accurate citations in various formats (APA, MLA, etc.), distinguishing between direct quotes and paraphrased content, preventing self-plagiarism, integrating with writing platforms for seamless citation insertion, offering plagiarism checks, and fostering awareness about proper citation practices. While these tools significantly assist in managing references and citations, it's crucial for students to grasp the fundamental principles of academic honesty, including crediting original authors, paraphrasing ethically, and understanding citation styles.

To deter, I use teach, practise, research, add something new at the end of sessions. Groups/individuals research a different aspect of the topic learned. They have a few minutes each to explain the new aspect learned to show new understanding. I encourage discussion with a real example or to add their own experience to learn how they speak, react or show their understanding. They don't have time to read, only use notes or memory. When they give me a written submission, without their experience or opinion, they know I will search and find the article using a browser by typing a section, add quote marks around a sentence and find plagerised work while they watch on screen. They learn to explain as they speak and give an example from day one.

I believe that by installing updated plagiarism tools to detect it, students both are discouraged to use other people’ words intentionally and are much careful to do that unintentionally.

En realidad creo q debemos practicar estas herramientas y ense?árselas pues en su vida profesional las personas q ahora son nuestros estudiantes se van a encontrar con esa situación y creo q es importante prepararlos para abordarla. El plagio es una práctica que no se restringe exclusivamente a la vida escolar y por lo mismo, los estudiantes de hoy deben estar preparados para abordarlo como profesionales. Siempre les pongo el ejemplo de que plagiar resultados en un laboratorio de análisis químico es causal de despido inmediato, lo q resulta de mi propia experiencia profesional. Debemos saber q puede existir el plagio o fraude, pero debemos desarrollar se?ales para detectarlo y acciones para abordarlo.

Some things I found helpful is having review sessions of what's been covered to enable students understand better and fill gaps in their knowledge as well as link subsequent learnings. Making learning a more social endeavour by incorporating peer oriented approaches to humanise and normalise learning activities. Providing immediate formative feedback to students on their strengths and areas needing improvement to foster responsibility for their personal learning. Ensuring the prescribed materials are all covered systematically and logically to ease learning and mastery of content.

In My experience, Teach them the integrity of their work and practice them to investigate and explore new ideas and how to write papers, also culture them the importance of publications. Moreover, make them to understand that plagiarism never helps them to move next level in their research.

Promote originality of thought as a culture in the classroom. Put more focus on the quality of the assignment rather than the length or time in which it was submitted. Include more real-life-outside-the-classroom learning so that students could be exposed to a healthy dose of reality.

make your students feel comfortable approaching you for help. provide your students with a sense of pride and integrity and reward them according to their time and effort.

A culture of integrity can be developed if you are helping students, not just burdening them with assignments. Available for them when they are in need. Help them spiritually. Cherish them, encourage them, and tell them the benefits of being honest.

When students are taught that they are evaluating articles and eventually incorporating their voice into what they choose to use from these articles, they will not plagiarize, in my experience.

When I taught college math, I would tell my students that "academic integrity" isn't just about their own integrity, but mine and the university's too. Based on the work they hand in, we give them a grade, then a degree, that promises the world that they know certain things. If that turns out to be untrue because they cheated, our reputation is tarnished, and the degree of everyone we graduate (including them) becomes worthless.

Let students choose to work on the topic they are interested and enthusiastic to do research. Even if they are not successful in achieving their target, encourage them to deviate slightly and let them fulfil their design. This will result not only in diversity but also automatically reduces copying or plagiarism.

Plagiarizing is basically copying of answers or content. Let's take a view on why it takes place. 1. Student had no time. 2.Student has difficulties in understanding and writing skills. 3.Submission dates and deadlines. 4. Peer pressure about grades given. 5. Feeling ashamed on securing less score. Solution: Allow students to use simpler terms and language as per their vocabulary, till they are confident of writing in their own style and sentences. Extra tutorials and practice to be given to enhance writing skills. Slowly, we may be able to overcome this weakness.
