When I educate physicians/APPs, I break down the coding for service they provide. I explain the components of the codes and the necessary documentation to support the reporting of the those codes. The more they understand the codes, the more they understand the required documentation requirements for those codes.

As a nurse-midwife, I would emphasize to physicians the critical link between accurate documentation and reimbursement. I would explain how precise documentation ensures that the care provided is accurately reflected, supporting proper coding and billing processes. This not only safeguards the financial health of the healthcare facility but also contributes to transparent communication and collaborative patient care.

I put my physician/APP clients on audit schedules so that their services get reviewed quarterly. After each review, I meet with each physician/APP separately to discuss their findings, talk about ways to improve their documentation and coding, and answer any questions they may have.
