1 Explore their purpose

The first step to finding their vision is to explore their purpose, which is the why behind their work, the reason they do what they do, and the value they create for themselves and others. To help them discover their purpose, you can ask them questions such as what they are passionate about, what their strengths and talents are, what problems they want to solve or opportunities they want to seize, how they want to make a difference in the world, and what values and principles guide them. Exploring their purpose can help them identify their core motivation and meaning.

Purpose is something that we choose not something we find, but something we create. Exploring purpose involves reviewing very simply, what does this person care about based on their beliefs and experiences. Then digging in deeper to see if what they care about is broader and a value. When you can define a list of your clients values, you can then start to get a hint of the purpose they want to focus on right now.

2 Envision their future

The next step to finding their vision is to envision their future. This includes the goals they want to achieve, the strategies they want to use, and the outcomes they want to accomplish. To help them envision their future, you can ask them questions such as what success looks like for them in the next year, three years, or five years. Additionally, ask about the key actions and milestones needed to get there, as well as the resources and support required. It's also important to consider potential challenges and risks they may face and how they will overcome them. By envisioning their future, you can help them create a clear and realistic picture of their desired state.

Future visioning is important but it will be foggy. The goal of future visioning is less about the vision of the future, and more about what does that mean for how you show up today.

3 Align their vision

The final step to finding their vision is to align it. Alignment involves connecting and coherence between their purpose and future, as well as between their vision and the vision of their organization, team, and stakeholders. To help them align their vision, you can ask questions such as how it relates to their purpose and values, the vision and mission of their organization, the expectations and needs of their team and stakeholders, how they will communicate it to others, and how they will solicit feedback. By aligning their vision, they can make sure that it is relevant, compelling, and collaborative.

Finding a vision is an ongoing process of reflection, exploration, and adaptation. As an executive coach, you can support leaders in this process by asking meaningful questions, listening actively, providing feedback, and aiding in action and learning.

Once you know where you want to go, you can figure out multiple paths to get there. It's critical not to pick one but instead to ideate on other options. The goal is to highlight to the client that if one path doesn't work, you just step around it.

Alignment needs to come at many levels. I have found that checking for Neurological alignment at the level of environment, behavior, capabilities, values and beliefs, identity and higher purpose is a very powerful exercise. I have always seen valuable insights being generated in my sessions through this.

Mapping out the expected behaviors and results are helpful, particularly when executives are facing a lot of change. It sets more realistic expectations and supports executives with understanding how their own behaviors influence results respectively.
