How can you help a leader build a strong network during a career transition?

Yo siempre sugiero tres pasos: 1.- Revisa los contactos de tu teléfono, allí podrás encontrar entre los "contactos dormidos", esos que tienen tiempo sin hacer contacto, una fuente de personas que ya conoces y te conocen, y te pueden ser útil para pasar la transición. 2.- Asiste a actividades de capacitación ya sea presencial u online, donde puedas ampliar la red, mientras aprendes algo nuevo. 3.- Acude a las reuniones gremiales de tu profesión, allí hay una fuente inagotable.

Si el objetivo es superar la transición profesional, véndete como tal, deja lo personal, familiar y social para luego. Lo importante es lo que hoy puedes ofrecer como profesional a la red que te pueda contactar.

I think exploring the leader's idea and comfort on Networking is a good approach. The purpose and drive behind networking also need to be captured. Helping the leader identify which of the current Networks most resonate with the leader and why will guide the leader on which area would be most fruitful in terms of networking

Executives require a tailored networking strategy - that is attainable, effective and outcome oriented. One thing that I usually prefer (due to higher rates of success) is to help strengthen the individual brand value proposition, career differentiators and aspirations. The dialogue on 'possibility' should be as active as 'past accomplishments'. Leveraging a wide array of channels to position oneself and also reach out to prospects is a game changer. As much as digital persona enhances image, helps in quantum reach-outs, the power of individual connection lasts way longer. It is also advisable to forms circles of network and the closest circle have parity in values & style and it gets diverse as other circles of network form.

En este caso hay dos cosas donde poner foco, y que el coachee debe practicar, ante el coach y en el espejo solo, estas son: 1.- Como se presenta en el primer contacto ante los otros. Debe saber que ese primer contacto es crucial. 2.- Tener un discurso corto, claro y conciso para vender sus servicios.

No problem with having a strategy, etc. but in my mind the best way to go about networking is to organically follow your interests, interactions, and involvement with the firm. Look to meet people you work with, know them deeply, and your network will grow. Seek to understand the business, and you will by inertia be exposed to others by your exposure to new parts of the business. Doing any of this for the end objective to grow a network is kind of shallow and unauthentic. Doing it because you are interested in people and the business will lead to a lifetime of career success and fulfilling relationships.

Your network is a series of relationships that you’ve developed over time. Therefore, it’s important to remember to always build and nurture your relationships, not just when help is needed.

Building and activating a network is crucial for executives navigating a career transition. Effective networking provides access to the hidden job market, where positions may not be publicly advertised and are often created on an as-needed basis.

I have a unique strategy I recommend for leaders and professionals building their network during a career transition. Either independently, or perhaps for an article for a trade or industry magazine or website, conduct a sector or industry study focused on an issue of key concern using interviews and focus groups. Offer to then provide the final article or report produced based on the research and the leaders expertise. The goal is meeting new contacts or key influencers without it being about a job search. This provides a way to build your brand as an authority, while also learning about the challenges and obstacles your target sector or industry is facing.
