1 Assess the situation

The first step is to help your client assess the current situation and identify the key risks and opportunities they need to address. This may involve conducting a SWOT analysis, a scenario planning exercise, or a stakeholder mapping tool. The goal is to help your client gain clarity and insight into the internal and external factors that affect their decisions and actions. You can also help your client prioritize the most critical and urgent issues and set realistic and measurable goals.

When partnering with clients, it is important to actively listen and to repeat back to them what I hear. I point out trends, themes, and any other observation along the way. I then ask the client to confirm or correct anything I repeated back to them. Allowing clients to have time and space to sit with their thoughts as they reflect on what they have shared.

I would start with what everyone needs to hear in a stressful moment - Everything will work out and I am here to help! Let’s go to work! This is my tips: 1 CALM THE MIND We can’t create under stress 2. GET IT OUT OF THE SYSTEM Write it all down. 3. RATIONALES What is true and what is beliefs - assess them into 2 piles first. 4. ASSESS Grade them from 1-5 or 1-3 in probability and potential harm Only address SWOT and bring on more if needed as a next step. FIRST let’s manage the things at hand and mind. Not overload! 2 Explore the options

The next step is to help your client explore the possible options and alternatives they have to manage the risks and opportunities. This may involve brainstorming, researching, or benchmarking best practices. The goal is to help your client generate and evaluate different solutions and strategies that align with their goals and values. You can also help your client assess the pros and cons, the costs and benefits, and the feasibility and impact of each option.

One of the most valuable steps in this stage is to first help leaders think about options without restraint. Phrases like, “That will never get approved.” Or “I could never pull that off.” Or “We tried that before and it didn’t work.” are limiting at this point. If we can help them contribute as many options and THEN help them discern the viability of those options through powerful questions, they will be more successful.

Part of the process of exploring the options is helping clients be really honest with themselves. Oftentimes, clients may get stuck and will not act due to fear. By walking through scenarios with clients, they are able to process aspects of a problem that they might have refused to think through in the past.

3 Develop the plan

The third step is to help your client develop a clear and actionable plan to implement their chosen option. This may involve creating a timeline, a budget, a communication plan, or a contingency plan. The goal is to help your client translate their vision into concrete steps and milestones that they can execute and monitor. You can also help your client identify the resources, support, and feedback they need to execute their plan successfully.

This may involve providing emotional support, encouragement, or motivation. The goal is to help your client cope with the stress, uncertainty, and resistance that may come with strategic change. You can also help your client develop resilience, confidence, and adaptability to overcome obstacles and seize opportunities.

One of the best ways to help clients manage their emotions is to verbally acknowledge the physical symptoms they are experiencing from a grounded state of empathy, and asking them to tell you what's going on. "I see your eyes are tearing up. What's this bringing up for you?" or "Your face looks so tense and frozen. Can you tell me more about why this matters to you?"

5 Review the results

The fifth step is to help your client review the results and outcomes of their plan. This may involve collecting data, measuring performance, or soliciting feedback. The goal is to help your client evaluate the effectiveness and impact of their actions and decisions.
