You all know how nervous you feel when you look out at the sea of faces and you don't know how your words are being received. We look for visual clues, so you too can participate in this process, nod your head in agreement, smile if you catch the speaker's eye, make notes, tilt your head to one side, sit up straight and a little forward for the important points. Whatever you can do, even once during their talk will go a long way to making your participation more explicit.

When training graduate students in giving presentations and speaking in public, we never gave feedback during a speech. This is quite intrusive, the audience may interrupt or ask questions, but to feedback on the actual delivery, no. So I made notes, of pointers, we videoed the students, so we could play back together to note their body language, how their slides looked, the tone and volume and so on.

We all know this, so it is not a hard and fast rule, because people know what you are doing. The main point in my opinion when giving feedback is to make it a collaborative process, a learning process. Not just you telling them what they did right or wrong, even 'experts' can give wrong advice, some things work well for some and not for others. Public speaking is a skill that develops in direct correlation with your interest and knowledge of the subject you are speaking about and your own personal sense of confidence and presence in a public space. So ask the right questions so the speaker can discover by themselves what they would like to improve for the next time.

As a trainer or tutor of anything, if are constantly under learning yourself, and you know you are a work in progress that is never finished, and that you do not know it all, then you can give some honest feedback and advice. If not then no one will listen to you because despite you thinking you are fooling people, you are not, all humans are surprisingly good at spotting untruths.

Focusing on the message means giving feedback on the speaker's presentation, not on their personality, appearance, or background. Literally who would criticise the speaker's personality, or what they look like? If this happens to you and the person giving the feedback doesn't focus on style or delivery of the content, or about the visuals, or how you move around the stage/room etc, then just get up and say 'thank you for your input' and walk away.
