Start with low volume highly engaging gatherings, think clubhouse and their alternatives on other platforms like Twitter/X Spaces, LinkedIn Audio Events...etc. Build a small high quality nework from there then add them to your CRM and make a commitment to engage with their content authentically, now your comment is not from random person so they'll reply and engage with you back and maybe with your content too! but the most important benefit here is your comments will start conversation and opportunities with a bigger network (their following). Just start implementing it and be patient and you'll not regret it!

Make an offer to the community. Is that some content? Is that your time? When you're getting started, this may feel insurmountable, as you don't think you have anything to contribute. I've been impressed seeing people with a year of experience writing very helpful posts aimed at people trying to get their first job. There's always someone who knows less than you (and even people at your level and above - not that this must be framed exclusively as "above" and "below"). Don't try to set the world on fire, just think of something authentic to you that you can put out there, and give it a shot. This contributes to the community for sure, and helps build your own connections and network as well.

My career journey is a testament to the importance of community. Simply attending meetups or joining slack channels is not enough. You have to be present and contribute. To benefit from community , you have to benefit the community. This could mean - welcoming people to the community - answering questions that people have - sharing your perspective on a topic - offering to help with community management or organising meetups (whether virtually or in person). For example, taking notes and summaries and sharing - linking people to resources - engaging meaningfully with what others say The key is to be helpful, leveraging your strengths but not overextending yourself.

One piece of advice I've often given to designers who want to get to know a little bit more about user research is to try out being on the side of a person being tested! You can sign up as a tester on a site like usertesting.com and then get a first hand experience of what it's like to be on the user side of things. It's a great first step toward learning more.
