How can you get involved in the product design community?

Online platforms help to reduce your hustle or stress by 50% because you learn from people's mistakes and discoveries. You don't have to go through the phase of making the same mistakes or trying to figure things out a process or phase I mean there's already someone who already done that and you just have to learn how.

Don't just stay online! Attend local meetups, design workshops, and conferences. Real-life interactions bring a new dimension to your network and skills. It's where online connections come to life and where unexpected opportunities arise. Balance your digital discoveries with real world adventures.

Online communities can be great as well! Start to follow and engage with people that you admire, or help you think differently. Commit to reading 10 pages a day on design from different design leaders with different lift experiences.

One thing I've found helpful was following your favorite designers or designers from your favorite companies across the online platform, usually, they will be active members in some of the product design community. we can follow those communities and become active members of them. If possible we can also attend local design meetups happening around you it will improve your offline presence

Attending events or even volunteering is a great way to put yourself out there. You get to network with people, share ideas and even learn from them.

Volunteering at local meet-ups can help you to build strong connection within your product design community. People get to know you more during the process. While organising an event or meet-up also showcase your leadership skills.

I was able to attend a certificate at the UCLA San Diego where I was able to meet a lot of Designers working on Printers, Contractors, Mechanical, Projects, etc. each one working on their own designs/Project Planing and applying the tools we were learning. It was a very powerfull experience. Meeting people from different organizations with real different projects with different challenges. Definitivelly, an excellent learning experience.

But it's really a good idea to start some open source libraries & forums where designers can find stuffs and answers to their design blockage and challenges. where people can actually help each other if they have face similar problems in to design. I have always been a fan of open-source products. There will be a vibrant community for every open-source product. For product design, the best way to start is to add your design projects to Figma's community. In this way, you can connect with many fellow designers. For example, you can create icon sets, mobile mockups, dashboards, or design systems. I am currently working on a full-fledged design system with tokens, components, auto layout, and proper documentation which helps other designers in the early stages, and I want it to be open source free to use, and easily usable. Contributing to open source projects is a great opportunity for product designers. This not only allows you to improve your skills and solve problems, but also improves your finances and reputation in the community. Working on projects like WordPress, Arduino, or OpenAI will give you real-world experience and collaboration opportunities.

In my experience, venturing into the product design community through open source engagement has been eye-opening. An example of this is my journey contributing to projects that transcend traditional boundaries. I agree with the emphasis on collaboration, yet I find that open source offers a personal odyssey of creativity and innovation.

Everybody knows the feeling or even recognises rising emotions when something does not happen the way you want it to happen... you are struggling with whatever what... while I was struggling weekend after weekend on racetracks all over the world trying to set up bikes , I couldn't stop thinking about better ways to deal with traction, absorbing bumps and handling... follow your thoughts, find out what is already out there and if your thoughts are feasible, not infringing and a solution for some problem.... than go for it!!

In my journey, starting a personal initiative in the product design realm has been a game-changer. An example of this is the blog I initiated, sharing my unique insights and solutions. It allowed me to express my creativity and vision authentically. While joining existing platforms is valuable, initiating your own project not only refines your skills but also carves a space for your distinctive voice in the community.

It can be challenging to find real client in the beginning, however no harm to get some pro bono projects in a small and manageable scale. This will help you to dive into real world problems, an opportunity for you to showcase your practical solutions. With these you are able to position yourself as a confident practitioner and have the credibility in the local community.

Starting a personal project is one of the most effective ways for mainly two reasons (especially in the early days of your career) 1. You choose what to do. So you can showcase the thing that most passionate you with your own design perspective. No clients compromises, so you show what you can do at its best. 2. You attract people interested in the field you decide to explore, both colleagues and clients. It is a job with no filters, so you genuinely narrate your vision and magnetically meet first other people that really understand what you are doing. This works online and in person.

Don’t forget the university itself. Most of the communities that we get involved as designers starts from educational systems, professors, and other students. Specially if you continue your studies to Masters, you meet a lot of people with different backgrounds who can help you and you can learn from them.

I am someone who, for the first time and in Persian, is active on YouTube about product design and industrial design. Experience has shown me that people who want to enter the world of design are those who are primarily looking for relevant and useful skills and then looking for how to design. This issue is somewhat challenging because if people want to enter the design community, they must also refer to the philosophy of design on the path of learning skills, otherwise they will become a software operator.
