Volunteering with Non-Profits or with industry associations is a great way to expand your skills and network. It has allowed me to grow an international network. Combined with many opportunities to create experiences and events that are highly experimental and innovative. Far beyond what many traditional clients would be willing to stretch. Finding an association that matches your core values and mission is very important. Research them and connect with existing members to find out if it is for you. Don't be afraid to try a few different ones until you find your perfect fit.

These extracurricular involvements not only enhance your skills but also demonstrate commitment and passion for event planning beyond your professional role.

If you have the time and the means, volunteering is a phenomenal way to gain more experience and insight into all aspects of event planning, especially ways to plan on a budget (if you’re working with a local or newer nonprofit), connect people to a cause, and involve multiple stakeholders in the pursuit of the goal. You also gain experience alongside like-minded people who have a passion for a cause, in a very non-threatening way…you are both giving of yourself and gaining experience at the same time.

Start virtually if it's overwhelming to plan an IRL event. Find a niche that you relate to and double down on it. Give yourself extra time for programming the first time around and leave enough time for feedback. Use those learnings for the next one and build your event experience from the ground up, in a forgiving environment where it's okay to make mistakes.
