You aren't going to learn any cyber security skills as a natural progression from PC repair. There are a number of free courses loosely based around cyber security - start there. Cyber security is about layers, which start at the perimiter of any network. Understanding routers, firewalls and VPNs is the next step. You don't have to be the expert at EVERYTHING, but you need a working knowledge on alot of infrastructure

Continue your search on courses, and look at CompTIA Security+ or equivalent exams, labs or courses. You don't need to know everything, but you need to have an understanding on alot of different things

One of the best ways you can volunteer to any organization is by keeping them up-to-date with the latest in relevant cybersecurity news. You will already come across many blogs and articles during your normal self-directed education so it's only an extra step to keep others aware simply by sharing information. I find that cybersecurity news is only truly interesting to those within cybersecurity so many do not pay attention to most of what is being said unless it makes headlines. Set yourself up a feed of less-mentioned cyber news, find a non-profit in your local area, and send them relevant cybersecurity news you come across. Find out what's relevant to them by establishing a rapport with them. You never know. They could end up a client.

Get certified CERTainly setting up a home lab, volunteering, or internships are most valuable, but certs also have value--especially for beginners by getting you on the same page in regards to speaking the same language, knowing the ridiculous amount of acronyms every industry has, and just having a general concept of best practices. If it's a hands-on, lab-based, practical cert, even better. You are demonstrating working knowledge. Every employer is looking for what you can do and a cert not only shows that you are willing and capable of learning, but also might just get your resume into the "second look" pile.
