Specific: Ditch the "raise a lot" dream and get precise. How much cash do you need for that summer camp? $50,000? Boom! You've got a target. Measurable: Don't just hope for magic money rain. How will you track your progress? Every grant won, every bake sale cupcake devoured? These milestones mark your path. Achievable: Don't aim for the moon unless you've got a rocketship (and a space permit). Be realistic but ambitious. Can you reach that $50,000 with clever campaigns and community support? Yes you can! Time-bound: Give your goals a deadline! Not just "someday," but "by December 31st."

When we are constantly monitoring where we are in our goals, benchmarks we are hitting and benchmarks we are missing, it helps us identify trouble spots and areas where we thrive. Imagine what one bad year will do for this organization. A bad year for this event means programs are cut and impact is lost. Instead, nonprofit organizations need to ensure they are building sustainable fundraising practices and providing diverse giving opportunities for a diverse pool of donors. Building a reputation with your donors that allows the vast majority of your funding to come in unrestricted will mean strengthened sustainability for your organization.

Often times youth serving organizations have an inverse business model where an increase in the number of youth served does not necessarily means increased income. Understanding your actual cost of service and then utilizing the cost as the business case for growth or predicting necessary revenue is key.

Like a game of chess, it's important that your "pieces" (or people) represent different talents and skills. This form of diversification helps position you properly for unique giving markets and diverse needs. Your "pawns" may be out there thanking donors and inviting them for tours, your "knights" may be solving specific problems or managing unique requests from corporate donors, your "rooks" might be focused on event fundraising and vendor partnerships...
