Keeping the voices of your beneficiaries central is so important as they are the heroes of change, the NPO is only the guide or support structure. But the voices of other stakeholders such as your collaborators and financial supporters are important too. Finding meaningful ways to honour all voices on the journey as co-writers adds depth to your story.

The biggest thing I’ve found in finding funding isn’t just about finding dollars, but personnel. Whether paid staff or volunteers, we seem to always be short handed. We have a decent staff, but we are constantly feeling stretched thin & not able to take full advantage of funding in front of us or what’s potential for us. Your staff need to have definition to their roles. Often times in nonprofits everyone is stretched & working on too many jobs that aren’t even close to theirs. I often tell leaders, sometimes the only way to handle the fires is to handle your fires. A hiring manager may be helping in a lot of areas for example, but at the end of the day if they choose to focus on their main priorities they’re helping/stewarding better.
