How can you find the most user-friendly structural analysis software for beginners?

It is not the matter of interface or if it is a user friendly. Beginners should use software only as a verification tool for hand calculations or for modelling simple structures in which mistakes can be easily noticeable.. at least for a year or two....If a beginner is limited only in designing/modeling simple structures than it is irrelevant which software he/she uses.. However, this is not the case in real world of design. Lately, especially in larger studios, beginners are designing/modelling complex structural configuration using the most advanced structural programs. This is the worst possible scenario which unfortunately has become a standard.

I would begin by identifying how detailed the model needs to be and the level of details expected by client. For instance, we can use MDX or Midas for steel girder analysis. MDX would take 30 mins whereas MIDAS might take a couple days to create the model. At the same time, MDX is a good tool for preliminary estimate but thats about it. And if the model needs to be detailed, I would look for supplementary softwares which would help me import the layout atleast. For instance, MIDAS allows import of dgn and dxf formats from AUTOCAD which would basically create a line model for you instantly.

During my time as an excellent and experienced structural and highway engineer I have interacted with several softwares. The most versatile and user friendly softwares I have encountered so far are Strap pro for structural analysis and civil 3D for highway design analysis. However great mentions include prokon, revit and Midas Civil.

For beginners, my personal opinion is to do the hand calculations at least 6 months and also when companies hire interns, they should motivate interns to do hand calculations instead of using any softwares.

My perspective is this…find a software that most easily reflects the intuitive results the beginner should have achieved with hand calculations. So many times we throw beginners into a software and spreadsheet based solution engine without them knowing the fundamentals that cause results (both correct and erroneous).
