I've encountered data architecture projects that failed to align with business goals. These projects ended up being a waste of time and resources. In my experience, it's essential to clearly identify the business problems that the data architecture is intended to solve. This ensures that the architecture is aligned with the organization's overall objectives. To achieve this, proactively engage with business stakeholders early on to gain a deep understanding of their needs and priorities. This helps to bridge the gap between technical and business perspectives.

Most important is understand the value of the business goals and the underlying data associated with it and what are the different steps to unlock the value of the business data

Irrespective of what architecture and technology you select, it is going to be absolute in 3 - 4 years as a lot of emerging tools and new ways will pose a challenge. What we can do is build a design which is independent of tools and technology and can be easily replaced with not much rework.

There are a few indicators that you can utilize: 1. Incidents are common / often 2. You're working around limitations on a regular basis 3. Costs are exceeding your budget - even if your architecture is perfect, cost is a major factor to consider 4. Your solution is difficult to integrate with or manage What to do next ? You don't need to start from scratch, map out your issues and score each for priority, impact & difficulty to solve. Once you have those 3 factors, have a candid conversation with your business partners and decide together on a course of action.
