I have always found that practical, real world experience has led me to greater leaps and bounds in my abilities. Theoretical knowledge is valuable. It helps you aim in the right direction and gives you a foundation to grow from. But it simply cannot replace actual life experience. Jesse Schell, author of the book "The Art of Game Design," famously says all it takes to become a game developer is to declare "I am a game developer" out loud. Next time you want to make a game? Just start. Seriously. You'll be amazed at how quickly you'll figure it out.
