Don’t be afraid to dig into an answer or idea. Come curious and seek to understand your team’s perspectives or ideas further. It needs to be genuine though. People can see right through a fake spirit or questions that are sneakily guiding them towards your agenda. If you want to empower your team and move towards autonomy and psychological safety within your team, just come curious and ask questions and let your smart team members do the thinking and talking.

Team decision making can sometimes provoke conflicts and emotions among your team members, particularly when there are disagreements, misunderstandings, or tensions. As a leader, it is important to handle these situations with empathy and professionalism. Respect is very key here. It’s critical to ensure that all parties involved in a disagreement know without a doubt that they are seen, heard, and respected. Leading with Empathy, Compassion, Kindness, and Patience will always get you further than if you come out aggressive, biased, frustrated, or annoyed. Even if something may seem small or insignificant to you, if there is a disagreement between two parties it clearly isn’t insignificant to them. Respect that and try your best to seek to understand where everyone is at before attempting to move them to a resolution.

5 Follow up and evaluate

After you have made the decision, you need to follow up and evaluate the results. Communicate the decision and the rationale to your team and other stakeholders. Assign and monitor the tasks and responsibilities for implementing the decision. Celebrate and recognize the achievements and contributions of your team. Review and reflect on the decision making process and the outcomes. Identify and document the lessons learned, best practices, and areas for improvement.
