How can you facilitate dialogue and learning on diversity and inclusion?

When it comes to diversity and inclusion I think it's important to first acknowledge our own privileges. Acknowledging our privileges does not diminish the struggles we might have faced but enables us to empathize with others whose journeys have been different. It is an essential step toward creating a more equitable society where everyone is afforded the same opportunities, regardless of their background. Understanding our own privileges requires self-reflection and an openness to learning about the experiences of others. It challenges us to confront biases and dismantle systemic barriers that perpetuate inequality.

Having conversations about diversity, inclusion and equity is critical. And yet, it can be a touchy subject. Many do not recognise their privilege. They want to believe they got their position off the back of their intellect, hard work, persistence, and skills and not because their headstart came from assumed competence based on their gender, race, socio-economic background, skin colour etc. It's a very threatening proposition and fraught with danger for the person starting the conversation. As a D&I educator, I often ask "Who do you think got a headstart in life off the back of their privilege?" That's a great lead-in to the second question. "What could be your privilege?" I'll also share mine as an example.

One thing that I've seen that has been helpful when presenting DEI presentations to new groups, is to address the "elephants" in the room at the very beginning. The facilitators will talk about stereotypes and questions that new people may be afraid to ask about, which helps open up dialogue and leads to a more productive conversation. Since this is an educational opportunity, it's important to create an open and safe space for discussion and to take intent into account. If people are making an effort to learn by participating in a facilitated discussion or workshop, it's important to not judge them if they don't know what they don't know.

Choosing the appropriate facilitator is critical in these forums given you want to ensure the individual has the credibility and organic ability to harness the beautification for differences, and not because he/she is mandated to and/or getting compensated for the task at hand. I find that expert facilitators in this work are programmed differently because he/she believes in human capital and that everyone has something to offer and we should look to amplify those messages, especially in these uncertain times. The lead speaker requires being a risk-taker and challenging others to become a part of the process and offer solutions where everyone can benefit regardless of their differences.

The important thing when participating or leading a discussion about diversity, inclusion and equity is to welcome everyone's views rather than argue against other people. Arguing will just see everyone double down on their opinion and the opportunity to open a learning portal is wasted.
