The most common reason I attend an event is to show support for a friend or client. Make sure you find them first to say hello, congrats, or whatever else is appropriate for the event. Once you have your main objective out of the way, everything else is a bonus. You can also exit at that point if you're feeling uncomfortable or you're tight on time.
