How can you evaluate a mechanic's ability to work with complex machinery?

One of my favorite interviews had an aptitude test where I had to diagnose a faulty pneumatic solenoid, take it apart to show the interviewer what I thought the problem was(then he provided the part) and put it back together and verify operation. Whether it was hydraulic or pneumatic you could gauge comfort with electrical and mechanical both big and small. You can observe process, cleanliness, methods and even ask questions during the work to get and understanding of where they are. I see so many people claim abilities beyond their scope and it can become a real liability.

I will agree, I had the opertunity to do some interviews, and drawings, schematics will tell you alot. Also some sample ladder that had missing inputs. We had a training room with test rigs, hydraulic and pneumatic with pre set faults. You can see who has experience in the way they do faulting.

times changes, mechanicals systems are always in continuous evolution, but nothing has changed in logical resolution. main system, sub-system, action, reaction...etc, whatever it was. almost of time, inside an expertise report, or an mechanichal issues report, we can find and evaluate the person who deal with the system

The best way is to watch, listen and have them help you with different jobs. Only then can you learn their true value. Each way gives a different perspective of their knowledge. Added together gives their true value as a technician

I believe other people is the best way to learn about the progress of a mechanic and about his performance. Normally, collegues in higher positions which work with the mechanic, can see him on the work and they have a mental image of his knowledge and experience.

Pair them up with your more experienced tech, have the that tech evaluate the new hire and see if his opinion is good. Does he have potential, good right now, needs work, or can he be trained to do this job. That's the best way that I've seen this done is with people.

In my opinion very few things compare to physically seeing someone perform. Aptitude tests don't tell the whole story and can be very intimidating during an interview process, resumes can be fabricated and fluffed, and references have a tendency to lie for their friends. So if you are looking for a true test of mechanical ability the only and most accurate option is to take the best candidate and give them a chance. People have a tendency to surprise!

Honestly the best way to evaluate is to physically watch them do a medium difficulty task in comparison to their expected daily tasks. A controlled "break" will let you know alot about their thought process and their ability to diagnose and solve said problem.

Something important to note is that we're all very different. You cannot simply make sure you have the best person. Sometimes it just takes time to observe the person you have chosen and then either grow them or replace them. I have seen on a number of occasions, people that are very intelligent that would fail on their interview just because they're shy, or because they are more cautious to do things unless they're 100% sure or they just think differently. Give them some time though and after a bit of settling in period they will excel in everything you ask them to do. So in my book, your best bet is to look at the credentials - that prove that they have been able to meet certain demands and try to judge their character as good as you can.
