Beware of analysis-paralysis. With new methods published regularly across myriad fields, the quest to find the absolute cutting edge can become a never-ending cycle. Instead, focus benchmarking on algorithms applicable to your specific use case and business needs. Leverage academic partnerships and industry events to stay abreast of developments relevant to your work, but balance this with in-house experimentation. Test promising algorithms in prototype systems first before wholesale adoption. This ‘fail fast’ approach allows quick iteration to determine real-world viability. Also, document learnings to inform future benchmarking efforts.

Set quantitative goals and thresholds at the start to define what constitutes “better” performance. Execute controlled A/B testing to confirm any improvements over the baseline and segment users to watch for regression. Always have young and curious members in your team. After some years of working in any field, most people start to think they know the best approach to a problem and they think they know the best tools to get there. Constantly adding new and young members who follow new ideas and think differently and even wrong about a problem will help the whole team remember that with each day passing new things and methods are getting introduced in their field of work which they must learn to stay up to date and creative.
