We can't completely avoid harm to the environment however implementing proper assessment and monitoring arrangements for the residual risk can mitigate the risk the circumstances pose to the environment. Environmental awareness to people will make the difference...

Are we serious? What about saving the lives that we are responding to and worrying about the environment later. Have we really lost then plot this much?

There's a template of environmental risk and its mitigation measures that's obligatory to prepare during proposal development. And based on that some activities are planned to implement during emergency response and orientation to the emergency response team on environmental safeguarding policy is of the activities which is mandatory for all.

I would not care about environmental impact; the lives and safety of my team/staff are far more important. This is a rather stupid question!

Environmental impact should already be included within you Emergency Response Plans . Not just incident scenarios but also any perceived environmental impact through your actions of responding to an emergency . Of course all incidents are dynamic scenarios and shall not follow a linear path nor necessarily completely align with your ERPs. Correct training and competency combined with empowerment and autonomy of Incident Commanders , should ensure an appropriate response to any ongoing incident , from an environmental perspective

One way I’ve found to excel during emergent situations is to train for it. During a crisis we tend to revert back to the way we are trained.

We taught the DNR students about water hazards for drinking as well as accumulation of wastewater. Our challenge for this week was Hazarous Materials Incident Response Operations that involved a huge amount of hazards to include heat stress where the temperatures stay constant. A week later we finished the class and had 100% of the students prepared for dealing with this disaster.

The action should be considered in the preparedness phase, not in the response: procurement of low emission vehicles and/or solar powered energy generators, use of compostable plastics in the soup kitchens, structuring cash & voucher logistics and plans, supporting an Early Warning Early Action system (to minimise the impact of the event and the need for a big response).. This are just some initial elements to be considered.
