How can you ensure your team is aware of safety risks when working with machinery?

We all accept that women are disadvantaged in many areas of business life. But if you want to intervene in this situation, we must be careful. While doing this, we should not put men at a disadvantage and create a balance in the workplace environment. While improving women's weaknesses or eliminating their disadvantages, we should not completely forget about men. If we do not do this, we will unintentionally feed the negative view of women in that environment.

Risk Assessment start right from we plan to buy a new machine and not after we get it in a factory. There are numerous instances when we do a safety audit we find non standard machine and equipments used thus not giving confidence to the user about its built safety and quality. This pushes user to adopt unsafe practices may it be from ergonomic design perspective or from guarding perspective. Hence a robust system has to be developed and deployed to check the machine and equipments to either CE or equivalent standards before we purchase it. For non standard machine and equipments a certificate of safety and stability should be demanded from the manufacturer before it comes to your factory.

a) Identifying the risks involved with machinery to ensure team safety! One example I can think of is conducting a risk assessment of a laser cutter in a workshop. This would involve evaluating the hazards of the intense beam of light, the likelihood of harm to anyone nearby & the severity of injuries that could occur. The team can then be trained on how to operate the machine safely and how to reduce the risk of accidents. b) Communication is key when it comes to safety. For instance, if a team member notices a safety hazard or a malfunction in a machine, they should be encouraged to report it immediately. Additionally, clear signage & warning labels can indicate where hazards lie, such as "Danger: rotating shaft" on a conveyor belt.

Start by conducting regular safety meetings to discuss potential hazards associated with specific machinery and reiterate the importance of following established safety protocols. Implement a robust training program that includes hands-on demonstrations, written guidelines, and interactive sessions to enhance understanding. Encourage open communication channels, where team members feel comfortable reporting concerns or suggesting improvements to safety practices. Regularly assess and update safety procedures in accordance with industry standards and equipment changes. Foster a culture that prioritizes safety by recognizing and rewarding adherence to safety protocols, and address any deviations promptly.

Creating a culture of continuous learning is vital to keeping teams up-to-date on safety risks and best practices. Hosting ongoing training sessions & workshops on new machinery and safety procedures for existing machinery can keep team aware and prepared for any situation.

Safety training should be part of induction training and also refresher training schedule should also be planned. Tool box talk and walk and talk type of trainings should be more frequently.

Well ..! Safety training must not be just powerpoint presentation/slide reading rather it must be creative,practical & actional one. Training should be entertaining not boring & the medium / language should be understandable based on teams backgrounds. Train your team supervise,monitor,engage,consult.

Os procedimentos para máquinas e equipamentos n?o podem ser as únicas medidas de prote??o adotadas para prevenir acidentes, devem ser complementos utilizados junto com outras medidas de seguran?a, o uso de EPI′s.

Inspection of Machinery for any damage will save your teams from unintended/ unwanted / sudden mishaps. Inspect for any defects , check color code,Inspection stickers,mandatory PPEs requirements, manufacturer's recommendations & most importantly use Machines if u are authorized / trained to operate.

Marcados CE y Reales Decretos(1215/97) son fundamentales para la empresa en cuanto a estar cubierta ante posibles accidentes, y también lo son para el personal de seguridad responsable de ello. Ahora bien, es clave trabajar en un ambiente seguro y con máquinas que no trabajen en degradado, por lo que dedicar tiempo, esfuerzo y dinero a su mantenimiento, es una inversión tanto segura como productiva.

Referring to machine's manual to help with safety risks identification, proper usage and maintenance. Develop training program such as detailed training for operators (knowing machinery parts, how to operate, troubleshooting, risks and measures to ensure safety, emergency response, incident reporting etc) and briefing for other workers who indirectly may exposed to the machine operations. May highlight noise, what to expect and precaution measures during machine operation, emergency procedures and incident reporting. Post relevant notices near the machine as appropriate for reminder.

At workplace there could be activities being carried out without a work permit, but not a single activity should be carried out without HITRA( Hazard Identification and Task Risk Assessment) involving person performing the activities like operating and maintaining machines and other line function operation and maintenance team. Plant specific, Job specific training, validation , retraining and revalidation cycle, at set frequency to make working team aware about the hazards, and importance of maintaining risk control barriers healthy. Entity and External LFI sharing and communicating incident with recommendations and implementing applicable recommendations to enhance machine safety.

Verifying that the controls work is needed. Many methods can be used..involve frontlune workers in the RA, take feedback on the effectiveness of the controls and amend ( listen), HS operational ownership by the working team, Ensure RA done addressed actual risks of the equipment.

In terms of machinery most organisation’s don’t consider the need for upgrading old equipment. They rather keep adding to the old equipment both operational/ safety features, sometimes for many decades. It’s understandable that replacing/ upgrading is a huge investment but that needs to built in as a part of the overall operational plan, especially considering the changes in both technology and legal requirements.
