Systems Architects usually have a think tank mindset, they always focus on the long term technical and business roadmap. They need also to be brought to the tactical aspect of development by a project/product manager that allows them to oversee the short term need for their impact to customer satisfaction.

When building tech systems, it's good to have a plan. But it's just as important to make sure the system can change easily. If we spend too much time making a perfect plan at the start, it can be hard to adjust later. And, things will change. A solid system should be easy to tweak without starting over. So, when making a plan, keep it simple, expect changes, and make sure you can handle them without too much hassle. That way, you save time and avoid headaches in the long run.

The system’s lifecycle needs have to be considered from the begining. A few examples of life cycle related questions that have to be answered: - Who is going to operate the system? - Who is going to provide maintenance to the system? - Where the system will be constructed? - How to dispose the system? And so on. The answers of these questions are going to provide needs. These needs have to be transformed into requirements that the chosen architecture should be able to satisfy.

When it comes to aligning system architecture with lifecycle stages, don't overlook the value of involving various stakeholders early on. This isn't just the tech team; get input from business execs, end-users, and even support staff. Use this diverse feedback to build a system that not only fits technical requirements but also solves real-world problems effectively. Iterate this process regularly, especially at critical lifecycle stages like prototyping or scaling. Documentation is your friend here. Keeping a well-maintained 'living document' that tracks changes, decisions, and the rationale behind them will make it much easier to ensure that the system's architecture continues to align with its lifecycle and goals.

Scope and purpose definition is indeed crucial--but the key question is, who is involved in this process? The answer *must* include bill-paying customers; users; and maintainers, with a strong feedback loop to those customers as you develop your model. In turn, access to these people depends crucially on the relationships you and the PM have built with the customer, so he/she knows you have their best interests at heart, and that you know what you're doing--so when you ask for time with line operators and maintainers, you're not going to waste their time or alienate them. So, the key driver here is you--and your relationships, relationships, RELATIONSHIPS.

Overall cost of ownership is determined when selecting the architectural framework. Ensuring that the end users and end maintainers have a simple job is key to aligning a product through all its lifecycle stages. A design with a difficult maintenance process will breed frustration to those who need the most use of your product. It needs to be easy to upgrade, simple to operate and require as little regular, person in the loop maintenance steps as possible. A good framework allows updates as necessary to address end user frustrations, providing a positive working relationship with you and those that need your product.

Picking the right architectural framework is like choosing the skeleton for your system—it sets the stage for everything that comes next. It's tempting to go with what's new and shiny, but remember, the framework should fit your project's specific needs and lifecycle. For example, if you're in healthcare, you'd probably lean towards frameworks that prioritize security and compliance. If you're building a system meant to scale quickly, look for frameworks optimized for that. Be aware of the trade-offs; some frameworks make initial development a breeze but can be rigid when you need to evolve. Review your project's lifecycle stages, and choose a framework that aligns well with those stages.

just as you wouldn't use a cake recipe for a pizza, you shouldn't pick an architectural framework that doesn't match your system's needs. So, how do you choose? Think about your system's size, complexity, and what it needs to do. Research different frameworks and see which one feels like the perfect recipe for your system. It's like finding that secret sauce that makes your dish (or system) a success!

Cost considerations occur all though the process. Let us consider the performance attribute mentioned. Perhaps the system being architected lives or dies based on performance. If high performance is the only consideration, it simplifies the problem. However, high performance is not usually the only factor. So, tradeoffs must be made. Be sure to consider the user in this. Their time and attention are valuable. For organizational user, the cost of additional infrastructure can be offset by better performance.

Know what the Test or Assessment requirement is, then talk to the System Subject Matter Expert (SME). Build the architecture framework to the test thread agreed requirement. Perform a dry run to ensure that Configuration and Quality management requirements have been tested and met for higher and lower echelon interoperability capabilities. Be sure to include measurement of the key attributes outlined earlier. You will need data/information on which to base current and future needs upon. All too often there are no measurements of how anything is working and the architect is left to spot checks and guessing.

The simplest approach is to include the concepts of time or maturity in your architecture description. I like including both. Capability delivery and deprecation milestones in your program or project perspectives, and capability maturity levels that are achieved with delivery of needed capabilities. Together these can help answer simple both important questions like - "where are we in the movie", and "how is our architecture performing as we continue to build and deliver"?

You should meticulously assess your system's architecture at each lifecycle stage. Look for any signs of wear and tear, like outdated components or inefficiencies. Ensure that it still aligns perfectly with the system's evolving needs. Think of it as a thorough health checkup for your system. The best way to ensure that your system's architecture aligns with its lifecycle stages is to be familiar with the needs of each lifecycle stage. Increasingly many system engineers and system architects have little practical knowledge of development/production, integration, transition to operations and support. I have always enjoyed working with my drafters, technicians, and especially observing operators/users, and seeing the maintenance phase to help me improve my system architecture considerations - have I designed for integration, have I designed for maintenance, have I designed for upgrade? Never be afraid to learn from everyone in the team or your stakeholder community.

Systems means “womb to tomb” we used to say EEs knew ohm’s law and MEs knew F=MV and a systems engineer knew some people;e who knew all the rest.

First make sure your functional analysis considers all life cycle stages and captures all functions the system needs to perform in each stage. Two, capture this functional analysis into a functional architecture which can then can be used to develop a physical architecture. All functional requirements need to be allocated to one or more elements of the physical architecture. Third, the System Engineer needs to validate that the physical architecture, with the allocated functional/performance requirements, will result in a system that satisfies stakeholder needs/expectations across the life cycle. Forth, the allocated set of requirements must be captured in a set of design specifications for system elements design. Last, manage change.

Registration of system / subsystem / component development timelines so they have some awareness and believability with honest status with the other components of the system design. That is a management responsibility for accomplishments of the evolving design of the system. Long poles need to be addressed and metrics must be assessed.
