Constant communication is the sole key component to a successful vendor relationship of any sort. This does not require much effort. This can be handled by email, chat, or phone call. Yes, this is more so for remote. However, even in person requires much attention as well. A good tool to gauge the progress for software development, as well as other vendor projects, is a progress tracker spreadsheet. At the end of the project, feedback from both sides is crucial.

The person/s handling this should know the ins/outs to train everyone & anticipate any unexpected hiccups to fix. Feedback from everyone involved is important.
