In excavations one doesn't really think of a fall from height, but in reality it is. Prior to our crews mobilizing into a new site I am getting with the Project manager for the project to go over the plans to get an idea of overall depth/height of our trenches. In 1926 we know our trigger height for fall protection is 6 feet. Once we hit 6 foot of depth do we need to bring fall protection to the trench side? Short answer is yes, but how do we implement? I work my way through the hierarchy of controls and tailor it to my site needs. Usually its a mix of barricading and fall restraint systems, but this can change at any time or need. I use excavation as this example due to most of us wouldn't think of the need, however its present.
