1 Choose appropriate impact categories

The first step in LCIA is to select the impact categories that are relevant for your goal and scope. You should consider the context, purpose, and audience of your LCA, as well as the availability and quality of data. You should also align your impact categories with the most recent scientific knowledge and standards, such as the International Reference Life Cycle Data System (ILCD) or the Product Environmental Footprint (PEF). Choosing appropriate impact categories will help you avoid omitting or double-counting important impacts.

In my experience the key considerations are independence, competency and standardisation. With multiple competing standards for scope and measurement still evolving between industries and geographies (noting that ISO 14040 is optional, competing for industry wide adoption) it remains possible to exploit ambiguities and narrowing of scope to serve a particular agenda and misinformation can be used by a wide audience without rigorous checking. Legislating independent environmental reporting audit/assurance against an industry standard is probably the most effective solution, learning from the earlier adoption of this approach for financial reporting.

From my knowledge, I would say four factors to focus on are 1. Data Quality: Ensure that the data used in the LCA is accurate, up-to-date, and relevant to the product or process being assessed. 2. System Boundaries: Clearly define the scope and boundaries of your LCA to avoid omitting important life cycle stages or including irrelevant ones. 3. Impact Categories: Select appropriate impact categories (e.g., greenhouse gas emissions, water use) and impact assessment methods based on the goals of your study. 4. Functional Unit: Define a functional unit, which represents the quantifiable function or service provided by the product or process. This helps in making meaningful comparisons.

CFs indicators to be used in comparative statements intended for public notification should be at least: - reliable from a scientific and technical point of view, that is, an accurately identifiable ecological mechanism and/or reproducible empirical observation should be used, as well as - environmentally relevant, that is, there should be sufficiently clear links with the final object (final objects) of the impact category, including, but not limited to, spatial and temporal characteristics. The category indicators to be used in comparative statements intended to notify the public should be recognized internationally.
