I have come to appreciate the importance of flexibility, and whilst planning and risk assessments are obviously important, the ability to react on the fly and cope under pressure are just as valuable.

It is crucial to include in your planning who is a final decision maker in your pre-event specific contingency or risk planning exercises. You may not be able to foresee everything, but you can game some things out as examples, and you can identify who should be making decisions in the heat of a moment when it is all going wrong at the same time.
