If your sample is not a close representative of the population, then you will be ended up with sampling error which means the findings made through the sampling would become invalid. Therefore samples should be carefully drawn form the population. It is necessary to have clearly defined objectives and scope for the process and sample. Identification of the variables and sub-variables within the population would be helpful to gain in-depth knowledge of the population and drawing a sample which consists of the key variables / attributes of the population. In addition, the variables could be subject to a weighting process based on its importance for the study and the nature of cross functional relationship among the variables.
