1 System design

Designing a hydrogen fuel cell system involves many aspects, such as the choice of fuel cell type, the stack configuration, the integration of auxiliary components, the control and monitoring strategies, and the thermal and fluid management. Optimizing the trade-offs between power output, efficiency, weight, size, and cost while also ensuring safety and reliability is essential for a good system design. To improve reliability, one should select a fuel cell type that suits the application requirements and operating conditions, such as proton exchange membrane (PEM), solid oxide (SOFC), or alkaline (AFC) fuel cells. Arranging the fuel cell stack in a series or parallel configuration to achieve desired voltage and current output while balancing the load is also important. Additionally, integrating auxiliary components like humidifiers, compressors, pumps, valves, sensors, and controllers can regulate the flow and quality of fuel and oxidant while providing feedback and protection for the system. Implementing control and monitoring strategies that optimize operating parameters like temperature, pressure, humidity, and stoichiometry while detecting and diagnosing faults like leaks or shorts is key. Finally, managing the thermal and fluid dynamics of the system to ensure uniform heat and mass transfer while preventing water flooding or gas starvation is essential.
