How can you ensure QHSE training is effective for hazardous environments?

Identify training needs: Begin by conducting a thorough assessment of the specific hazards present in the environment and the required competencies and knowledge employees need to work safely. Develop clear learning objectives: Clearly define the learning outcomes you want to achieve through the training. Tailor the content to the audience: Adapt the training content to the specific needs and characteristics of the participants. Consider their job roles, experience levels, and prior knowledge. Provide hands-on practice: In hazardous environments, it is essential to provide practical, hands-on training whenever possible.

Before designing or delivering any QHSE training needs, you need to assess the specific needs and risks of your workplace and your workers. This means identifying the potential hazards, the legal and regulatory requirements, the existing gaps and weaknesses, and the desired outcomes and objectives. You can use various methods to conduct a needs and risk assessment, such as surveys, interviews, observations, audits, or incident reports. The results of the assessment will help you tailor your QHSE training to the context and the audience, and to prioritize the most critical topics and skills

In my experience it is always better to start by taking a walk around the site to see what is there that is working, look for the positive side of the people and workplace. Emphasize on them and identify all the hazards, unsafe acts and conditions that will require a specific training to boost their knowledge and awareness. Remember to always build and add-on what is working perfectly before your intervention.

Conducting a Risk Assessment will flag out all potential and risk identified areas. Then, using a risk index matrix, assess the risk level by looking at the product likelihood and consequence. If high, immediate mitigation measure must be employed to reduce the danger. This is the importance of assessing the risk.

The first thing is that, to give all the necessary training to our employees. Some employees should also be given special training related to their job like craft training and third party trainings etc. Some ways as follows, Monitor the job steps which they are performing to do the job. Ask random questions in the walkthroughs like safety , quality and construction etc. Ask simple questions during tbt. Try to Involve their daily job briefings prior to start the each day. Monitor accident and near-miss also conduct investigations. When you say that there is a training today, look at their interest in it. We have to convince the employees that, all training for our safety. Intervene and enforce the importance of training is important.

One thing I've found helpful is blending both training techniques, ranging from on-task trainings and classroom, and blending staff from a wide range of specialization. I train all at once for others to be their brothers' keeper. I find peace watching admin staff reminding a welder to fill that hot-work PTW at my workplace.

Accident rates, Unsafe acts reporting rates, near-miss reporting, exams or test results and positive observations/behavior at workplace can surely tell a lot about the effectiveness of ones HSE Trainings. It is always better to acquire feedback from trainees on a particular training, one way or another.

It's crucial to adapt to new standards, technologies, and practices to maintain high safety standards and minimize risks. I personally ask staff to identify a specific topic or session they feel like they do need a refresher.
