Use Secure Remote Access- If troubleshooting remotely, ensure secure access methods such as VPNs and secure remote desktop connections are in place to protect data during troubleshooting. Firewall Settings-Verify that firewall settings are appropriately configured. Ensure that only necessary ports are open, and limit access based on the principle of least privilege. Update and Patch-Ensure that the Windows operating system and network-related software are up-to-date with the latest security patches to address potential vulnerabilities.
Follow the OSI model. Use divide and conquer troubleshooting methodology. ISFW with proper intervlan/lan policies is a must these days. Define the purpose of the network and zone them as possible example inside, dmz, outside, guest, wireless. Your firewall should be the gateway plus decision maker for policing traffic. It should be good enough to do layer 7 inspection i.e ips/ids/av/filtering. For policies, basic rule of thumb avoid the three any in a policy any(source)|any(destination)|any(service). For starter review purposes bring polices down to 2 any, and one must be specific. Then bring it down to 1 any for 2nd review.

You should also restore your data and configuration settings from your backup if needed.
