2 Choose the right IAM model

Depending on your cloud needs, you may choose different IAM models to manage your users and resources. In my experience, IAM SSO with SAML integration has worked for most business as a single source of truth. Most businesses if not all all have Active Directory or Office365 which in partly can be used to extend the Cloud IAM capabilities to your onpremise business users. Not only access to AWS accounts but various applications hosted in Cloud for eg. AWS Workspaces, AWS WorkDocs, Managed Opensearch etc..,

3 Apply the principle of least privilege

One of the most important IAM best practices is to apply the principle of least privilege, which means that you grant the minimum level of access that users and devices need to perform their tasks. This can reduce the attack surface and the potential damage of unauthorized or malicious actions. 4 Implement multi-factor authentication

This can enhance your IAM security and prevent unauthorized access based on stolen or compromised credentials. Requiring users to provide multiple forms of identification, such as a password along with a one-time code sent to their personal device, acts as a strong barrier against unauthorized access attempts, those coming from stolen or compromised credentials. Think of MFA as using both a key and a fingerprint to unlock a physical secure vault. While the key alone provides some level of security, adding the requirement for a unique fingerprint ensures that only authorized individuals with the correct access are granted entry.

Finally, you need to monitor and audit your IAM activities to ensure that your IAM policies are effective and compliant. An often overlooked area is IAM entropy - credentials that go unused, keys that are forgotten about and never rotated or removed. It is important to review metrics for credential's last use and remove ones that are no longer needed.

My few thoughts on effective Monitoring and Auditing the IAM activities.. Regular checks empower swift detection and response to any unusual activities, ensuring data integrity and protection. Regularly reviewing IAM activities to ensure that only the right people have access to the data. Prevention is always better than reaction. Prioritization of IAM audits to secure the organization's sensitive information must need to be done effectively IAM monitoring and audits are watchful guardians against potential breaches. Regularly reviewing access controls can keep the organization's data safe and sound.

Totally aligned with most of contributors have already mentioned least access policy. I'll go to some specifics that we are working on as a process we are defining granular policies for all logical operations i.e EKS creation and then map it to an EKS role once that's done then all EKS provisioning is done assuming that role only. Another thing that we are working on is resources constraint policy i.e how many EC2 instances can be created and then a application specific role will be a combination of these 2 policies. Would love to hear other people thought as well
